About the role
This position assists Senior Mechanical Engineers, as well as guide Mechanical Engineers-in-training in the coordination of project execution in accordance with client requirements and objectives, within cost and schedule constraints, and in quality procedures and practices. Mechanical Engineers assist more senior engineers in the preparation of plans, calculations, and reports.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Apply principals of Mechanical Engineering to specifications and design of process equipment;
- Work independently and with teams to manage small and intermediate size projects in the design of oil and gas processing equipment or heavy oil plant facilities;
- Analyze piping and equipment due to force, thermal, vibration, and impact/shock loads using theory, Code defined procedures and finite element analysis;
- Apply practical knowledge and develop a broad base of skills, while contributing to the overall success of Propak’s operations through interaction with a cross-functional team;
- Review and approve fabrication drawings;
- Participate in 3D model reviews and construction planning meetings;
- Participate in Piping and Instrumentation Drawing (P&ID) reviews and Hazardous Operability Studies (HAZOPs);
- Check vessel, piping spooling, and assembly drawings;
- Perform shop inspections and resolve technical issues;
- Assist with resolutions of field Requests for Information (RFIs);
- Respond to queries and issues pertaining to mechanical engineering;
- Supervises, trains, coaches, and mentors junior engineers on a temporary, task level basis;
Prerequisites
Education
- Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited university
- Professional Engineer registered and in good standing with Alberta Professional Engineers, and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA) or eligible for membership
Experience
-
5+ years’ of directly related experience in mechanical design of oil and gas processing equipment or heavy oil plant facilities in the Canadian context
-
Demonstrated competency in applying principles of mechanical engineering to specifications and design of process equipment is considered an asset
-
Experienced with ASME and CSA pressure vessel and piping codes, NBC and ASCE building codes and API codes
-
Knowledge of FEA, vibration analysis, and impact/shock related problems
-
Experience working with Caesar II, FE/Pipe, and ANSYS is required.

Experience working with Creo engineering software and scripting languages such as Python is considered an asset
-
Familiarity with conducting Piping and Instrumentation Drawing (P&ID) reviews
-
Experience with design, installation, and operation of refineries or oil and gas processing equipment including refrigeration, turbo-expander, or amine treating plants is an asset

Experience in a fabrication environment is an asset

Experience within an EPC and EPCM work environment is an asset

Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite
