About the role
Transdev Canada is hiring Casual Transit and Paratransit Operators for our Salmon Arm location.
As a Transit Operator, you will deliver safe, reliable, and customer-focused transportation services across both Conventional Transit and HandyDART operations. This role requires flexibility, strong customer service skills, and a willingness to learn and operate multiple service models and vehicle types.
Your Role
- Safely operate conventional transit buses and smaller accessible vehicles in compliance with all traffic laws, transit regulations, and Transdev safety standards.
- Follow assigned routes, schedules, and dispatch instructions, while remaining flexible to accommodate door-to-door service and booking-based adjustments for HandyDART trips.
- Provide courteous, professional, and compassionate service to all passengers, including individuals with mobility needs.
- Assist passengers with boarding and exiting vehicles, securing wheelchairs or mobility devices, and ensuring accessibility and comfort throughout the trip.
- Maintain control of the vehicle in all traffic and weather conditions, prioritizing passenger safety at all times.
- Conduct thorough pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections, including checking safety features such as brakes, ramps, lifts, and securement systems, and report maintenance issues promptly.
- Ensure vehicles remain clean, sanitary, and presentable throughout the shift, following all cleaning and disinfection protocols.
- Communicate clearly and effectively with dispatch regarding schedules, delays, route changes, incidents, or emergencies.
- Accurately record trip details, passenger counts, incidents, and other required documentation, submitting reports in a timely manner.
- Operate on-board systems such as fare collection equipment, destination signs, and other transit technology as required.
- Monitor passenger behaviour and intervene appropriately to maintain a safe and respectful environment.
- Maintain a professional appearance and demeanour while upholding Transdev’s standards, policies, and procedures.
- Perform other related duties as assigned to support safe, efficient, and reliable service delivery.

Your Profile
- You have a Class 4 Unrestricted BC Driver's license.
- You have a minimum of two years of driving experience.
- You have a safe driving record with no recent violations or preventable accidents.
- You possess the ability to manage challenging situations with patience and professionalism.
- You have strong customer service skills.
- Prior experience in passenger transportation is an asset.
- Familiarity with Vernon and surrounding geography and road network is an asset.
- You must successfully complete all pre-employment requirements:
**Medical assessment, Drug and alcohol test, Criminal Record & Vulnerable Sector Check, and Trainability evaluation.**This role requires the physical ability to lift, push, and pull items weighing up to 50 lbs on a routine basis.
Your Location
- This is a casual, on-call, unionized position based in Salmon Arm, BC, with work assigned as needed.
- Shifts are variable and may include early mornings, evenings, weekends, and split shifts.
- Service operates 7 days a week, typically between 7 a.m. and 9:30 p.m., so flexibility is essential.
