Join the City of Medicine Hat as an Assessor I!
Permanent | FullTime | On site
$45.22/hour to 52.91/hour | Relocation assistance available
If you're looking to build a meaningful career where your work directly impacts communities, property owners, and local services, this is your opportunity. As an Assessor I, you'll play a key role in determining fair and equitable property assessments that support municipal decisionmaking and public trust. This role offers handson learning, mentorship from experienced assessors, and a clear pathway to professional accreditation and career growth. For the right candidate, this role offers stability, challenge, and longterm opportunity.
What you'll do
In this role, your work will directly contribute to:
- Fair and consistent property assessments that support equitable taxation and community services.
- Clear, confident communication with property owners and stakeholders, helping them understand how assessments are determined.
- Accurate property valuation data that stands up to public scrutiny, appeals, and regulatory review.
- Timely and reliable assessment outcomes that support annual and supplementary taxation processes.
- Trusted assessment practices that align with legislation, professional standards, and municipal policies.
A Closer Look at the Role
Your days will be a blend of officebased analysis and field work. You'll inspect residential and nonresidential properties, measuring structures, reviewing construction details, and capturing data that feeds into valuation models. Back at the office, you'll analyze property data using mass appraisal techniques - comparing sales, replacement costs, and income approaches to arrive at accurate market values.
You'll spend time responding to assessment inquiries, explaining valuation decisions, and supporting complaint or appeal processes. With guidance from senior assessors, you'll build practical expertise in legislation, valuation theory, and municipal assessment systems. As your experience grows, so will your confidence, independence, and professional credibility.
What you bring
We're looking for someone who combines curiosity, integrity, and resilience, including:
- Strong analytical thinking with a natural ability to work with numbers and data.
- Clear, respectful communication skills and confidence engaging with the public.
- Sound judgment and the ability to make decisions within established frameworks.
- A collaborative mindset paired with the ability to work independently when needed.
- Adaptability and resilience when managing deadlines, competing priorities, and challenging conversations.
- A genuine interest in property valuation, community development, and public service.
Qualifications
- A twoyear diploma in property assessment or a related field from a recognized postsecondary institution.
- Eligibility for membership with the Alberta Assessors' Association, with a commitment to pursue professional accreditation through the Alberta Assessors' Association or the Appraisal Institute of Canada.
- Knowledge of, or the ability to learn, provincial assessment legislation and valuation practices.
- A valid Class 5 Alberta Driver's License with an acceptable driving record.
- An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
