Reporting directly to the Director of Corporate Services, the Territorial Manager, Health, Safety and Emergency Preparedness (Manager) is tasked with the strategic leadership, management, and administration of the Health, Safety and Emergency Preparedness Unit, in keeping with its mandate while contributing to satisfying the Government of Nunavut’s and Department’s commitment creating healthy, safe, and secure environments for departmental staff, students and school staff, and others working in or a part of Nunavut’s education system. The Manager supports the Department in the application of its Project Management Process Administrative Directive and participates in Committees as and when required that pertain to the activities of the Division and / or the Department as a whole. Additionally, the position ensures that the services and supports they provide reflect and are aligned with Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit (IQ) principles.
The incumbent will ensure that the Department adheres to the requirements outlined in the Public Service Act, Safety Act, Education Act, Emergency Measures Act, and other legislation, policies, directives, etc. related to maintaining and ensuring the health, safety, security, and well-being of employees, workers, facilities, students, and other applicable departmental stakeholders. The Manager is responsible for fulfilling an important role in the Department and is charged with a significant portfolio of responsibilities to ensure a positive direct impact on the health and well-being of the Department’s staff, the student population, and other departmental stakeholders. The incumbent will interact with a variety of partners both within and externally to the Department such as other Departments, regional stakeholders, etc. and provide support to all departmental and regional staff and stakeholders distributed across the territory.
The knowledge, skills, and abilities required for this job are usually obtained through a recognized a degree in business administration, science, or related field plus five (5) years of directly related work experience and at least one (1) year of supervisory experience. A diploma or certificate in occupational health and safety or a master’s degree in a related field are considered assets. This is a Highly Sensitive Position and a satisfactory Criminal Record Check, along with a clear Vulnerable Sector Check is required.
The Official Languages of Nunavut are Inuktut, English and French. Applicants may submit their resume in any of the official languages of Nunavut. Fluency in more than one of Nunavut’s official languages would be considered an asset. Knowledge of Inuit communities, culture, land,Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit A degree with a focus on Early Childhood Education is considered an asset., Inuktut and experience working in a northern cross-cultural environment are also considered assets.
