About the role

Job Opportunity: Controller The Controller plays a pivotal role within the Finance department, overseeing a wide range of accounting activities across several entities and business units. Reporting into the VP of Finance, this position is central to ensuring accurate financial reporting, regulatory compliance, and effective budgeting. The Controller will also help strengthen internal controls and provide financial insight that supports both operational teams and overall business performance. The right candidate will be detail-driven, analytical, and adaptable to the dynamic pace of the construction industry.

Primary Responsibilities Accounting & Financial Management

  • Direct the day-to-day functions of Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, and Payroll.
  • Lead the monthly and annual closing cycle, preparing journal entries, accruals, reconciliations, and complete financial statements, including consolidations.
  • Review and validate internal reporting packages for accuracy across different divisions.
  • Maintain general ledger integrity and ensure compliance with ASPE standards.
  • Monitor and reconcile intercompany accounts.
  • Oversee schedules related to fixed assets, prepaids, accruals, and other financial items.
  • Manage weekly and monthly cash flow reporting and forecasts.

Compliance & Audit

  • Prepare and file all required government remittances (HST, WSIB, EHT, corporate taxes, etc.).
  • Support the external audit process, including preparation of schedules and working papers.
  • Develop and enforce accounting policies and document internal control procedures.
  • Maintain corporate registrations and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.

Budgeting & Forecasting

  • Work with the VP Finance to coordinate the annual budget and periodic forecasts.
  • Conduct variance analyses, highlighting key drivers and recommending corrective measures.
  • Collaborate with department heads to gather inputs and provide financial guidance.

Systems & Process Improvement

  • Act as the Finance team’s ERP expert (Vista by Viewpoint preferred), improving data accuracy and reporting efficiency.
  • Recommend and implement process automation and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Participate in ERP upgrades, new system rollouts, and data migration projects.

Construction & Project Accounting

  • Partner with project managers to monitor job costing, WIP reporting, and cost allocation.
  • Analyze margins, cost variances, and equipment/labour allocation.
  • Provide financial insights to support project forecasting and performance monitoring.

Collaboration & Team Support

  • Serve as a trusted financial partner to operational leadership.
  • Mentor and guide junior accounting team members.
  • Contribute to cross-departmental initiatives aimed at improving financial visibility and decision-making.
  • Follow company policies and perform additional duties as needed.

Qualifications & Experience

  • CPA or CMA designation required; background in a public accounting firm is an asset.
  • At least 7+ years of progressive accounting experience, ideally within construction or project-based industries.
  • Deep knowledge of ASPE, job-costing methodologies, and multi-entity accounting structures.
  • Advanced Excel capabilities, including modeling and complex reconciliations.
  • ERP experience with Vista by Viewpoint (or comparable construction systems).
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with exceptional attention to detail.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines independently.
  • Effective communicator, both written and verbal, comfortable working with non-finance stakeholders.
  • Previous experience supporting audits and preparing year-end documentation.
