The mandate of the Department of Justice is to administer justice, including policing, community justice, victims services and corrections in the Northwest Territories. This mandate will be carried out in a manner which respects community and indigenous values and encourages communities to assume increasing responsibilities.
Job Information
As the Court Worker Supervisor, you will lead the Court Worker program for the Legal Aid Commission, directly supervising regional Court Workers across the Northwest Territories. You will ensure effective training, open communication, and proactive staffing and performance management in alignment with the Legal Aid Act, its Regulations, and the Policies and Guidelines of the Legal Aid Commission.
You will also serve as the sole Court Worker based in Yellowknife, balancing supervisory responsibilities with direct client support. Your work will involve close collaboration with accused persons, community justice committees, lawyers, courts (JP, Territorial, and Supreme), probation officers, court staff, police, and other justice system stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities
- Supervise and support regional Court Workers
- Ensure access to justice for individuals and communities
- Maintain compliance with relevant legislation and policies
- Manage training programs and budgets
- Analyze program data and provide recommendations
- Foster relationships with community services (e.g., Band Councils, RCMP, Probation and Social Services)
Knowledge & Skills:
- Understanding of the justice system and criminal law procedures
- Familiarity with community needs related to circuit court sittings
- Ability to supervise and motivate staff effectively
- Proficiency in data analysis and program evaluation
- Knowledge of applicable legislation including the Legal Aid Act, Criminal Code (Canada), Youth Criminal Justice Act, and relevant Territorial Statutes
Key Qualifications:
- College-level certificate or diploma in Office Administration or Management Studies
- Minimum 2 years of directly related experience
- Valid Class 5 Driver¿s License
- Willingness to travel by vehicle or air to communities across the territory in all seasons
Acceptable Equivalency:
- Degree in Office/Business Administration with 1 year of relevant experience
