Job Summary: Program assistants on the community youth program (CYP) team work closely with community houses and local partner organizations in the PQ catchment area. They are responsible for planning and facilitating programs, afterschool clubs, drop-ins, and events for youth of all backgrounds. Program assistants act as role models for participants in their programs. They create a warm, caring, safe, and respectful environment for youth to connect, access resources, and attend programs without judgement. This position requires excellent facilitation and time management skills, flexibility, creativity, and a strong ability to connect and form positive relationships with youth.

Program Description: The Program Assistant position supports various community youth programs at Pinecrest-Queensway Community Health Centre and offsite locations. They help to create a safe, friendly, supportive, and inclusive environment for youth to gather, learn, and grow. This position requires a genuine interest in working with youth ages 13 to 18, reliability, creativity, strong communication and organizational skills, and the ability to work well within a team. An interest in sports, art, music, or other youth-friendly hobbies is an asset.

**About The Brotherhood Program:**this is a community-based afterschool program for young men/ male-identifying youth, ages 13 to 18. Its goal is to provide a safe, supportive space for participants to learn, grow, make friends, and develop life skills.

General tasks include:

  • Supervising groups of up to 20 students during afterschool programming (8 to 15 students per program on average, 20 at maximum).
  • Helping to plan and facilitate activities, sports, games, contests, fieldtrips and special events for youth.
  • Room & gym set up, including arranging tables and chairs, decorating, setting up sports equipment, activity specific equipment etc. Clean-up after meetings. General administrative tasks, such as taking attendance, helping with program registration, filing, creating posters and other promotional materials.
  • Helping to prepare and serve meals and snacks.

Qualifications: Due to the nature of this program, this position is intended for applicants who identify as men or as male-identifying, and who bring lived experience relevant to supporting boys and male-identifying youth. Applicants must identify as men or as male-identifying and are asked to self-identify in their application.

  • High school diploma or 2-3 years related experience in a community setting
  • Related experience in youth programming in a community setting, and community programs, especially with at-risk youth.
  • Experience working with youth ages 8 to 18, such as babysitting, youth program assistant, coaching sports, camp counsellor, daycare etc.
  • Experience working with youth from diverse cultural backgrounds
  • Ability to work afternoon and evening shifts in person, potentially as late as 7PM for certain programs.
  • Fluency in English is essential; fluency in other languages is desirable.
  • Proficiency in the use of computers and various software applications
  • Valid First Aid and CPR (level C) is an asset
  • Vulnerable Sector Police Record Check required

Founded by community members in 1979, we are one of about 60 non-profit community health centers across Ontario. We are run by a volunteer Board of Directors comprised of 12 community members elected at our annual meeting.
