Reporting to the Foreman, Shallow Utilities Labourers play an important role in supporting the safe and efficient installation, maintenance, and restoration of shallow underground utility infrastructure. This is a physically demanding, outdoor position well suited for individuals who enjoy teamwork, working around live utilities, and seeing tangible results at the end of each day.
How You’ll Add Value
- Actively contribute to the safety culture, promoting a safe and productive work environment
- Assist crews with the installation, maintenance, and repair of shallow underground utilities
- Excavate, backfill, and compact trenches manually or with small equipment while maintaining grade and compaction requirements
- Safely expose live utilities through hand digging and test holes
- Load, unload, move, and organize materials, tools, and equipment
- Spread gravel, compact backfill, and restore work areas to project specifications
- Assist with site restoration following utility installation, including grading and clean-up
- Set up, maintain, and remove traffic control devices; direct traffic when required
- Signal equipment operators to ensure safe and precise movement of equipment and materials
- Operate small tools and equipment such as plate tampers, jackhammers, saws, and hand tools (as authorized)
- Maintain clean, organized, and hazard-free work areas
- Follow direction from Foremen and Lead Hands to ensure quality standards are met
- Assist with daily equipment cleaning and basic maintenance
What You Bring
- 1+ years of experience in underground construction, or utility-related work (shallow utilities experience considered an asset)
- Ability to lift and carry 50lbs in various weather conditions
- Valid Class 5 Driver’s License with a Driver’s Abstract showing no more than 6 demerits and no major infractions
Note: Pre-employment Drug and Alcohol testing will be required

About Lakes District Maintenance
Since 1988, Lakes District Maintenance has been dedicated to maintaining safe and reliable highways across central British Columbia. Our teams work year-round to service the provincial highway network, ensuring roads, bridges, and culverts remain safe and accessible. With a strong focus on Safety, People, and Performance, we are committed to getting the travelling public where they need to go. In 2016, Lakes District Maintenance joined the Volker Stevin family of companies, further strengthening our commitment to delivering quality services. Today, we maintain approximately 3,500 lane kilometres in the Lakes and Stikine service areas.
