This position works in the Special Events organizational unit. This is administrative and supervisory work in planning, coordinating and directing the development and implementation of all public festivals and special events for the City of Burnaby in partnership with community, municipal and corporate stakeholders. In addition, the work involves supervising directly and through subordinates, staff engaged in developing, coordinating and implementing events; managing event changes and stakeholder involvement; establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with a wide variety of internal and external contacts and acting as a resource for community led events; coordinating fundraising for events; participating in annual and long-range planning and preparing budget estimates; developing, monitoring and controlling event budgets. An incumbent exercises considerable independent judgement, action and initiative within departmental policies and guidelines. Unusual or difficult problems and policy matters are discussed with a supervisor who reviews work performance in terms of the provision of effective services and the attainment of desired goals and objectives. This position develops, reviews and approves plans and proposals, contracts and agreements. Performs related work as required.
Qualifications include completion of a university degree in arts, cultural administration or a related discipline, plus considerable event management and supervisory experience, or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Considerable knowledge of the cultural needs and interests of the community served, the interests and functions of community groups and agencies, and of available internal and community resources. Sound knowledge of the methods, practices and procedures involved in preparing and monitoring event budgets and contracts. Ability to plan, assign, supervise, evaluate, recruit and train staff. Ability to prepare annual budget estimates, to develop, monitor and control event budgets; to identify potential overruns and recommend resolutions, and handle grant applications for events. Ability to establish and maintain effective liaison and working relationships with a variety of internal and external contacts, to develop community interest and involvement in city led events, and to act as a resource for community led events. Ability to exercise independent judgement, initiative, tact and diplomacy in the work. A Driver's License for the Province of British Columbia is required.
Salary: $6,200 – 6,460 – 6,730 – 7,011 – 7,319/month (Pay Grade 23)(2024 Rates)
$6,643 – 6,921 – 7,209 – 7,510 – 7,839/month (Pay Grade 23)(2026 Rates)
Schedule: 70 hours bi-weekly; Monday to Friday from 9:00 AM – 4:30 PM (Mutual Agreement between Monday to Sunday, 5:30 AM – 2:00 AM)
This is a temporary full time role untilSeptember 18, 2026.
