The Manager of Coding and Data Quality is responsible for providing leadership, direction, and management to the Coding and Clinical Documentation Improvement (CDI) team in accordance with the Hospital's mission, vision, and strategic plan. This role also oversees the data quality of abstracted and coded data for mandated submissions and works collaboratively with various departments and regulatory entities.

Here's What You'll Do

  • Plan, assign, direct, audit, and monitor the work of Coding and CDI staff, including developing and approving staff schedules, evaluating and managing performance, and coordinating staff selection and training processes.
  • Monitor productivity against benchmarks and make recommendations for improving accuracy and efficiencies.
  • Prepare and administer assigned budgets, monitor expenditures, and perform cost/benefit analyses.
  • Analyze and monitor operational performance, ensuring compliance with required timelines.
  • Develop and implement policies and procedures in accordance with relevant standards, and organizational and legislative requirements.
  • Lead and support various initiatives and projects assigned.
  • Anticipate future operational needs, based upon internal and external factors such as SickKids Strategic Plan, Project Horizon, and CIHI's Hospital Data Transformation Initiative, collaborating with Director, Health Information Management (HIM) to develop appropriate strategies to ensure operational alignment.
  • Maintain professional knowledge by staying up to date with coding guidelines and regulations, attending educational workshops, and establishing networks.
  • Ensure accurate and timely coding of patient records to meet mandated reporting deadlines and internal reporting needs to support effective care delivery and management of patient care.
  • Facilitate continued education for Coding and CDI staff to ensure alignment with current standards and guidelines.
  • Disseminate new or revised reporting requirements from the Ministry of Health and other applicable parties, and ensure operational processes are aligned.
  • Resolve coding discrepancies and provide guidance to coders.
  • Develop and monitor data quality/accuracy audits for coded data, analyze data to identify trends, patterns and areas for improvement and implement quality improvement activities.
  • Generate reports and presentations to communicate findings and recommendations from coded data related to data quality/accuracy issues as well as associated potential impacts to funding.
  • Oversee development and delivery of hospital-wide education on HIG methodology, ICD-10, HBAM, QBPs, and other relevant topics.
  • Promote Health Information Management awareness and Clinical Documentation Improvement throughout the organization.
  • Evaluates and implements new technologies and systems which may enhance Coding and CDI processes, in collaboration with relevant stakeholders. This includes new and evolving technologies, such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning driven Computer Assisted Coding (CAC) solutions.
  • Supports maintenance of Coding and CDI related systems, in collaboration with relevant stakeholders (e.g. WinRecs, Solventum CodeFinder)
  • Liaise and engage with vendors, to ensure contracted service level terms are met for Coding and CDI related systems
  • Respond to compliance checks and queries from the Ministry and other government agencies in a timely manner.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant regulations and standards.
  • Provide representation on relevant internal and external working groups and committees
  • Prepare reports and briefs for senior leadership, internal stakeholders and relevant committees
  • Communicate effectively with staff, stakeholders, and other departments
  • Collaborate with clinical staff, broader Information Management and Technology, Finance, Decision Support and other departments, to ensure the collection and timely production of quality data to support operational and strategic discussions with internal and external parties, such as the Ministry of Health

Here's What You'll Need

  • Undergraduate degree in Health Information/Informatics, Health or Business Administration, or other related discipline, and /or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Master's degree in a related discipline is an asset
  • CHIM certification/ Active membership with the Canadian Health Information Management Association (CHIMA)
  • Demonstrated leadership and management experience (3-5 years or more), including operational, financial, and performance management
  • Demonstrated experience in Coding and Data Quality, and/or Decision Support or Business Intelligence
  • Advanced operational knowledge of funding methodology (e.g. HSFR)
  • Extensive experience in the coding/abstracting process, data collection and submission (e.g. CIHI, IDS), as well as leading data quality/quality assurance audits
  • High degree of initiative, attention to detail, analytical and organizational skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing, and to synthesize and present complex and /or technical information
  • Strong critical thinking, and ability to navigate ambiguity while exercising sound judgement within a complex, dynamic environment
  • Ability to adjust to new and unexpected events and to deal with and/or guide others in the resolution of conflict issues
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with proven ability to interact positively and productively with a variety of personnel within the organization
  • Self-directed learner who is comfortable managing situations requiring research and leveraging internal and external resources to complete required work activities.
  • Ability to establish and revise work priorities to meet strict non-flexible deadlines.
  • Advanced computer skills: Microsoft M365 Suite, databases/database software (e.g. Crystal, SQL), data visualization tools (e.g. PowerBI)
  • Experience with EHR and Content Management Systems, such as Epic and ChartMaxx
  • Experience with coding and abstracting technologies, such as WinRecs or Solventum Codefinder Software (formerly 3M Encoder)
  • Understands the importance of fostering a culture of equity, diversity & inclusion
