Position Summary
Reporting to the Associate Dean, School of Leadership, Learning and Academic Excellence, the Open Education Support Strategist provides support for various open education initiatives including support to educators and programs on how to discover, adopt, adapt, or create open educational resources (OER) and how to design learning experiences that integrate principles of open pedagogy. The incumbent supports the collection, management, and reporting of data regarding the adoption of OER at Loyalist College.
The incumbent will collaborate with stakeholders from a variety of areas within the College and also with provincial colleagues in the open education space to eliminate barriers to access and progression in education systems.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Supports OER creation/adaptation projects, including those funded by OER grants and supported by the Library’s Open Publishing Suite (OPUS).
- Supports pedagogical and technical consultation for educators and programs. This includes consultation on how to discover, adopt, adapt, or create open educational resources (OER) and how to design learning experiences that integrate principles of open pedagogy.
- Supports onboarding and training (e.g., Creative Commons licenses, Pressbooks, H5P, etc.) for faculty and staff involved in OER creation/adaptation projects.
- Supports the collection, management, and reporting of OER
- Responds to queries in the online open education question queue.
- Researches and maintains currency with evolving and emerging open educational practices.
- Gathers and shares information about relevant OER with library, CLLAE and Flexible Learning & Open Education Strategist.
- Suggests recommendations about the future prospects of specific open education technologies.
Qualifications
- Completion of a four (4) year degree in Communications, Education, Educational Technology, Adult Learning, or Library and Information Science; Master’s degree preferred
- Completion of the Facilitator of Adult Learning Certificate or other adult learning/eLearning-focused coursework required
- Minimum three (3) years’ experience working with faculty/subject matter experts (SMEs) and other stakeholders to curate and adapt OER and experience providing pedagogical and technical consultation and support to faculty, staff, program teams and community stakeholders
- Demonstrated ability to design, develop, and deliver information, resources and training on open educational practices
- Demonstrated ability to create or adapt OEP using open education tools, such as pressbooks, H5P
- Working knowledge of creative commons licensing
- Demonstrated ability to create or adapt OER using open education tools
- Working knowledge of open pedagogy (i.e. renewable assignments)
- Excellent ability to communicate clearly and concisely, gain buy-in, and adapt to different audiences (i.e. explain technical information to non-technical audiences)
- An ability to effectively manage a busy workload with tight deadlines
- An ability to work independently or as part of a team
- Takes initiative and proactively and creatively solves problems
- An ability to apply an understanding of diversity and inclusiveness to meet the needs of a diverse student population
