About the role

Why Work Here?

Employees at ATCO are offered endless variety. We are entrepreneurial with a large degree of autonomy and freedom, experiencing new situations and learning opportunities every day. Internal advancement is commonplace, and we are always supported in our career journey. We believe in creating a workplace where you can thrive professionally while contributing to something greater and serving our communities.

About the Role:

As Director, Taxation, you’ll provide enterprise-wide tax leadership across the ATCO Group, helping shape how we manage tax risk, deliver strong compliance, and make sound decisions in every operating jurisdiction. You’ll lead tax planning, governance, and external relations, with oversight of income, indirect, and property tax matters, and you’ll partner closely with business unit leaders to enable strategy and support growth. As ATCO’s senior tax representative with tax authorities, external advisors, and industry bodies, you’ll build trusted relationships and bring clear, confident guidance to complex issues. Just as importantly, you’ll build and sustain a high performing tax function by leading, mentoring, and developing a diverse team where expertise grows and people thrive.

What You Get to Do:

  • Lead enterprise-wide tax governance across the ATCO Group, ensuring tax-related responsibilities are met in every operating jurisdiction
  • Drive efficient, accurate, and timely tax compliance, overseeing returns, filings, and remittances across income, indirect, and property tax
  • Develop risk management strategies and lead audits, disputes, and appeals, building transparent, professional relationships with auditors and tax authorities
  • Lead tax planning that supports business strategy, including minimizing tax expense across continuing operations and M&A, and designing internal reorganizations that maximize access to ATCO’s tax attributes
  • Partner with leaders across ATCO business lines to provide clear guidance on tax implications, develop innovative solutions within regulatory frameworks, and deliver compelling briefings and presentations that explain or defend ATCO’s positions
  • Represent ATCO externally with advisors, the Canada Revenue Agency, the Department of Finance, and other tax authorities; and, with Government Relations, help influence tax legislation, while contributing to the broader tax community through industry groups
  • Build and lead a high-performing, inclusive tax team; recruiting and onboarding talent, coaching and developing individuals, setting clear accountability, managing capacity and priorities, and partnering with your HR Business Partner to ensure alignment with HR practices and standards

What You Bring:

  • Undergraduate degree in Finance, Accounting, or related field
  • 15+ years of progressive tax experience in complex, multi-jurisdictional environments, with a significant portion at a senior leadership level
  • A professional Canadian accounting designation (CPA)
  • Completion of the CPA Canada in-depth income tax program
  • Advanced knowledge of Canadian corporate income tax, working knowledge of international tax principals and the ability to manage diverse client needs
  • Understanding of indirect taxes, property taxes, sufficient to provide enterprise oversight and risk governance, tax risk management, compliance frameworks, and audit processes
  • Demonstrated experience managing audits/disputes and external advisors
  • Knowledge of tax governance models, policy development, and internal controls in a complex corporate environment
  • Strong understanding of how tax intersects with M&A, corporate restructuring, financing and business strategy
  • Familiarity with regulatory engagement (CRA, Department of Finance and other tax authorities) and the role of government relations in influencing legislation
  • Proven ability to lead, develop, mentor and retain a specialized team of tax professionals
  • Highly effective relationship-builder with regulators, external advisors, auditors and industry peers
  • Strong collaboration skills in order to partner across business units and ATCO companies

What We Offer:

  • A culture based on caring, integrity, agility, collaboration, and striving for excellence
  • Competitive compensation
  • Flex benefits
  • Tuition assistance program
  • Training and mentorship programs
  • Charitable donation matching
