Role Responsibilities
Are you ready to make a meaningful impact on road safety and driver education in Alberta? As a Licensing and Training Specialist in the Driver, Carrier and Vehicle Services Division, you’ll ensure that Alberta’s driver training programs and professionals meet the highest standards.
As a Licensing and Training Specialist, you’ll play a key role in regulating and supporting Alberta’s driver training programs and professionals. This dynamic position blends technical oversight, fieldwork, and stakeholder engagement. You’ll ensure that instructors, schools, and examiners meet high standards, while helping shape the future of driver education through training delivery, curriculum review, and policy advice. The role involves travel across Alberta to conduct audits, deliver training, and engage with stakeholders in diverse communities.
Your key responsibilities include:

Licensing and auditing driver training schools, instructors, and examiners to ensure compliance with legislation and standards.

Delivering and evaluating training programs across all licence classes, including Train-the-Trainer sessions and specialized courses.

Conducting road and theory examinations for instructor and examiner applicants, and supporting public testing when needed.

Reviewing and approving curriculum content for programs such as Air Brake, Defensive Driving, Long Combination Vehicle, and School Bus training.

Recommending licensing approvals or disciplinary action based on performance and compliance reviews.

Advising stakeholders on licensing policy, training standards, and regulatory interpretation.

Supporting program improvements through contributions to policy, legislation, and curriculum updates.

Maintaining accurate records, issuing licensing-related inventory, and ensuring data integrity.
This role involves frequent travel—approximately up to 25% of the work schedule—throughout Alberta. It offers a dynamic blend of classroom, on-road, and stakeholder-facing work, ideal for those who thrive in flexible, hands-on environments.

Qualifications
Required:

A related university degree (e.g., Education, Criminal Justice, etc.) and a minimum of two (2) years of related experience. Equivalencies may be considered.

Experience in driver training and licencing.

Eligibility to be licenced as a Driver Examiner in all licence classes.

Ability to read and understand legislation.

Valid Alberta Class 5 driver’s licence or equivalent, and ability and willingness to travel within Alberta.

Background in adult education, instructional design, or related fields.

Experience with audits, inspections, or curriculum review in a regulatory environment.

Proficiency with licensing systems (e.g., TSIS, MOVES).

A valid Alberta Class 1 driver’s licence (or equivalent), air brake endorsement, and school bus certification.
Equivalencies are:

A related two-year diploma and a minimum of four (4) years of related experience; a related one-year certificate and a minimum of five (5) years of related experience; or a minimum of six (6) years of related experience in lieu of formal education.

This position is a permanent, full-time role with the standard weekly work hours of 36.25, Monday to Friday (8:15 am – 4:30 pm).

Due to the essential nature of the work, this role requires in-office presence and is not eligible for the hybrid work model.
Recruitment Process:

Candidates may be required to participate in a written assignment as part of our assessment process.
