The Company They are an established AAA game development studio based in Montreal, Quebec and backed by one of the largest game publishers in the world. Their current focus is on building a large-scale, narrative-driven action-adventure RPG set in a richly imagined medieval fantasy universe. The team is dedicated to delivering high-quality, immersive gameplay experiences while fostering a collaborative environment that values creativity, mutual respect, and a shared passion for making great games.
The Role They are seeking a Senior/Principal Gameplay Programmer with deep experience building player-centric gameplay systems, particularly around melee combat, traversal, and character movement. In this position, the successful candidate will take ownership of core gameplay functionality, ensuring that combat, sprinting, climbing, jumping, traversal, and overall player responsiveness feel intuitive, fluid, and polished. Working closely with designers, animators, and technical leadership, they will help translate creative vision into engaging, high-performing gameplay systems.
The Responsibilities: Design, architect, and implement gameplay systems for player combat, movement, traversal, and character abilities Develop and refine mechanics including melee combat, sprinting, climbing, jumping, vaulting, dodging, and other player actions Partner closely with design and animation teams to achieve responsive, satisfying gameplay feel Rapidly prototype, iterate, and refine gameplay mechanics based on feedback and playtesting Collaborate across disciplines to integrate gameplay systems seamlessly into the overall player experience Contribute to shared gameplay architecture, code frameworks, and development tools Write clean, maintainable, and well-documented C++ code Optimize gameplay systems to ensure smooth, scalable performance across target platforms
The Requirements: 8+ years of professional gameplay programming experience, with significant ownership of player character gameplay systems Strong experience developing melee combat, traversal, locomotion, or player movement mechanics for AAA titles Shipped at least one AAA PC or console title Advanced proficiency in C++, Unreal Engine 5, and 3D mathematics Strong understanding of animation-driven gameplay, player input, and responsive character control Experience collaborating closely with game designers, animators, and technical teams Demonstrated ability to deliver polished, high-quality gameplay systems from prototype through production Self-sufficient, solution-oriented, and passionate about crafting exceptional player experiences
