Transit Fleet Maintenance Planner (ID: 54046)

Reporting to the Supervisor of Planning & Controls, the Transit Fleet Maintenance Planner is integral to the development, implementation, coordination, and monitoring of comprehensive maintenance and servicing plans for approximately 1,000 City and client-owned buses. The successful candidate will leverage their extensive maintenance knowledge and strong planning skills to meet maintenance and repair objectives, ensuring the effective and efficient utilization of resources and facilities. This high-impact position directly influences garage efficiency, asset lifecycle management, and customer downtime - all vital metrics for the Transit Fleet Maintenance section.
What will you do?
- Identify and integrate all necessary variables into the planning process, including: preventive maintenance (PM), midlife overhauls, recalls, campaigns, capital projects, client requests, parts availability, and seasonal fluctuations
- Ensure all necessary maintenance data is accurately entered into the M5 fleet maintenance system to provide clarity for users, streamline progress reporting, and enable timely intervention for potential delays
- Develop project plans for campaigns and strategic initiatives
- Collaborate on the development and oversight of all TFM maintenance forms, ensuring compliance with OEM and regulatory requirements
- Develop, monitor, and maintain standard repair times (SRTs) for maintenance work to enable production staff to accurately predict timelines
- Monitor bus availability to identify when contingency options or investigations are necessary to improve fleet utilization
- Maintain change management logs for planning projects and maintenance program revisions
- Initiate and facilitate continuous improvement opportunities, aligned with LEAN methodologies, to eliminate waste and improve downtime metrics
- Develop and monitor Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for trends requiring escalation
- Coach and mentor TFM operational staff to ensure a thorough understanding of the planning process and M5 system requirements
- Collaborate with the TFM Controller group to develop work plans
- Document TFM planning processes and standard operating procedures (SOPs)
- Prepare formal reports and recommendations supporting investigative or operational requests
- Monitor bus spare ratios and recommend adjustments to support ETS service requirements
- Perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
- Grade 12 or equivalent
- Journeyman Certificate as per Alberta standards as a Heavy Equipment or Auto Body Technician, or a two (2) year diploma in an appropriate Engineering Technologist program
- Completion of coursework in project planning and management, office automation ,and Fleet Maintenance software applications
- Six Sigma Certification is an asset
- Five (5) years experience in many aspects of diversified vehicle and equipment fleet maintenance planning
Skills required for success :
- Strong planning aptitude with a demonstrated ability to detail project plans and effectively communicate expectations to all stakeholders, ensuring successful plan execution
- Demonstrated understanding of preventative maintenance (PM) fundamentals, hierarchy, and applicable regulatory requirements within a fleet maintenance environment
- Extensive experience using maintenance related software
- Experience utilizing a variety of forecasting and data management tools to drive continuous improvement initiatives
- Thorough knowledge of LEAN methodologies, industry standards, and implementation processes that directly influence capacity and maintenance planning
- Proven ability to conduct investigations and deliver formal reports and presentations with actionable recommendations
- Ability to develop Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), collaborate effectively with stakeholders, and facilitate ongoing process improvements
- Effective team player skilled at knowledge sharing, providing leadership, and offering coaching to colleagues
