Contract Opportunity: Sign Language Interpreter

1. Introduction

Avon Maitland District School Board (AMDSB) is seeking the services of a qualified third-party contractor to provide American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation services to support a Deaf or hard-of-hearing student at Bedford Public School, Stratford, ON. This role is essential in ensuring equitable access to education and fostering an inclusive learning environment.

3. Scope of Services: American Sign Language (ASL) Interpretation

The successful contractor will provide American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation services to support a Deaf or hard-of-hearing student within a school-based setting. Services shall include, but are not limited to, the following:

Instructional and Environmental Access

  • Deliver ASL interpretation to facilitate student access to the Ontario Curriculum during instructional periods.
  • Provide interpretation for school-based activities occurring during the school day, including but not limited to field trips, assemblies, and co-curricular events.
  • Support communication within the broader school environment to ensure full participation of identified student(s).
  • Interpret auditory stimuli to ensure student safety, including announcements, bells, and emergency procedures.

Inclusive Learning Support

  • Collaborate with the school team to foster an inclusive educational environment for Deaf students.
  • Acknowledge and support the classroom teacher's role as the lead educator responsible for academic programming and learning outcomes.
  • Assist in the implementation of instructional, environmental, and assessment accommodations (e.g., closed captioning of audio materials).
  • Identify and facilitate opportunities for students to expand ASL vocabulary aligned with curriculum content.
  • Promote and support peer interactions to encourage the development of social relationships.
  • Uphold respectful learning environments and safeguard the dignity of all students.
  • Engage in ongoing communication and collaboration with members of the school team.

On-Demand Interpretation Services

  • Provide ASL interpretation services upon request from the school team for additional educational or administrative needs.

Meeting Participation

  • Attend and contribute to meetings as required, including but not limited to school team meetings, enhanced team meetings, case conferences, and consultations with external partners such as the Provincial and Demonstration Schools Branch and the AMDSB Teacher of the Deaf/Hard of Hearing.

Additional Duties

  • Provide additional services as reasonably requested by the System Principal of Learning Services, in alignment with the scope of the contract.

4. Required Qualifications, Experiences and Skills

  • Minimum three (3) year College Diploma in ASL-English Interpreting; a University Degree is an asset;
  • Active membership in good standing with the Canadian Association of Sign Language Interpreters (CASLI) is an asset;
  • Verification of ASL proficiency may be requested through an assessment administered by a qualified independent assessor.
  • Demonstrated expressive and receptive ASL skills
  • Demonstrated expressive and receptive spoken and written English skills
  • Experience working as an interpreter with school-aged children
  • Knowledge of the basic principles of educational practices, the function of support services, and the role of interpreters as part of the students' educational team
  • Demonstrated ability to promote equitable and inclusive education for all students, and advocate for equity-deserving groups
  • Demonstrated ability to adhere to the CASLI Code of Ethics and Guidelines for Professional Conduct

5. Process and Requirements for Submitting Applications

Applicants must submit a written proposal including the following sections:

  • Description of applicant's previous experience, qualifications and skills

Budget, Hours of Work, and Location

  • $56,000 to $62,000 (for full time) or pro-rate based on hours worked
  • 10-month contract, September 2, 2025, to June 25, 2026
  • Elementary classroom support, Bedford Public School, Stratford, ON
