The Department of Family Medicine specializes in training comprehensive family physicians and future leaders in family medicine. This is done through a highly adaptable program that includes tailor-made curriculum and educational programs for residents.

The Diabetes Research Program at the Centre for Studies in Family Medicine (CSFM) includes clinical trials, participatory and translational research, and population-based and information technology health research, all with a focus on the prevention or optimal treatment of diabetes.

Responsibilities

The Clinical Trial Research Assistant (CTRA) position is an essential role within the Diabetes Alliance. Working in the Clinical Trials Program of the Diabetes Alliance with the overarching objective of evaluating the efficacy and safety of novel diabetes therapies and developing innovative trials using comparative research methods, the CTRA supports the Clinical Trials Program Coordinator and Principal Investigator to initiate and implement, investigator-initiated and industry sponsorsed randomized controlled trials working collaboratively with others in the Clinical Trials Program (other CTRAs, Technical Support Specialist, students, volunteers). The CTRA is also expected to work collaboratively with other members of the Diabetes Alliance.

The CTRA position requires a balance of autonomous, self-directed work as well as supervised and team work depending on the phase of the trial. This position is expected to contribute to multiple simultaneous trials. Trials are implemented concurrently, the usual volume is 4-8 trials simultaneously typically lasting 1-5 years. The final number of participants involved in trials range from 5 individuals to over 200 per trial, however due to the recruitment, screening and consent procedures 10 times the final number are processed.

Qualifications
Education:

  • An undergraduate university degree in Nursing or equivalent education (Nursing diploma) is required, OR
  • An undergraduate university degree in a health-related field and certification in Diabetes Education is required
  • Diploma/Certificate in Clinical Trials Management is preferred

Experience:

  • 3 years of previous clinical trial research experience

Skills, Abilities & Expertise:

  • Phlebotomy experience - Certification of Venipuncture
  • Good Clinical Practice certification
  • Experience performing electrocardiography (ECG) testing
  • Demonstrated experience processing and storage of blood
  • Demonstrated experience with research ethics processes and familiarity with privacy issues
  • Diabetes clinical research experience is preferred
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Creative problem-solving skills and sound professional judgment, especially regarding confidentiality and guidelines in conducting research
  • Professional manner, tact, and diplomacy
  • Computer skills in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel)
  • Ability to process information with high levels of accuracy
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills
  • Proven ability to work independently and as a team partner
  • Attention to detail, accuracy, and the ability to pick up new skills quickly are essential
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, balance tight deadlines and adapt quickly to new challenges and competing priorities
  • Ability and willingness to employ a consultative and collaborative approach to addressing issues and making decisions
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills
  • Proven ability and natural inclination to interact with people in a professional, culturally sensitive, respectful and diplomatic manner
  • Knowledge of Western policies and procedures, including privacy and confidentiality, related to research
