About the role

The Alma Mater Society (AMS) is the University of British Columbia’s (UBC) student society, and works to improve the academic, social and personal lives of the 56,000 UBC students at its Vancouver campus. The AMS also runs nine food and beverage outlets, a catering and conference operation, and the AMS Student Nest, providing on-campus employment opportunities and generating revenue that goes directly back into supporting the students at UBC.

Position title: Graphic Designer (Work Learn)

Reports to: Sr. Marketing & Communications Manager

Supervises: None

Employee status: Part-time, up to 10 hours a week

Compensation: $21.17 per hour

Length of term: Until April 30, 2026

Are you a UBC student with a keen eye for communication design? Help bring the work of Canada’s largest student union to life. The Alma Mater Society (AMS) of UBC is looking for a creative and talented student graphic designer to help us tell our story. As part of the Creative Services team the student graphic designer plays an important role in the organization, creating visually engaging and professional designs that support our many campaigns and programs.

Duties and Responsibilities:
In addition to bringing your graphic design skills and understanding of student aesthetics to the role you will:

  • Participate in weekly department meetings.
  • Contribute to evolution and management of the AMS brand.
  • Design support for various print and digital applications, including brochures, posters, advertisements, as well as website, social media and rich media graphics.
  • Still and event photography, as required.

Skills & Experience:

  • Must be a currently registered UBC student.
  • Experience working with Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign, and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects and deadlines.

Other experience considered an asset

  • Photography
  • Portfolio of previous graphic design work required.
