About the role
Welcome to Sagicor
Sagicor is a leading financial services provider with over 180 years of history, which operates across the Caribbean, in the United States and Canada.
Sagicor currently operates in 19 countries and maintains a strong market position in most of the markets where it operates. Sagicor has four reporting operating segments, Sagicor Life, Sagicor Jamaica, Sagicor Life USA and Sagicor Canada. For the last 12 months ending September 30, 2024, revenues were US$3.9 billion with assets under management of US$23 billion.
Sagicor’s objective is to be a leading insurance and financial services provider of world class products and services to better serve its customers and other stakeholders in its markets. Sagicor is focused on growing its business in the markets in which we operate and actively supporting the communities in which we serve.
Here’s the job opportunity…
We are seeking a Senior Data Governance Manager to establish and run day-to-day data governance for Sagicor’s Azure-based enterprise data platform operating under a hub-and-spoke model. This is a hands-on role with ownership of governance execution across the enterprise data platform, working closely with business and technology teams to build and operationalize governance practices.
The role will lead the adoption of the data catalog (Microsoft Purview), business glossary, data lineage, data quality management, and data classification practices across the enterprise. As the governance program matures, there is opportunity for this role to expand in scope, including building and leading a small governance team and shaping longer-term governance practices across the enterprise.
Core Responsibilities
- Lead day-to-day data governance execution across the hub-and-spoke model, working with Hub (Platform CoE) and Spoke stakeholders.
- Stand up and run governance routines: intake, prioritization, issue tracking, decision logging, and follow-through on actions.
- Establish and maintain a practical data catalog in Microsoft Purview: asset registration, ownership, descriptions, and metadata standards.
- Build and maintain a business glossary: define common business terms, align definitions across segments, and link terms to data assets.
- Support and improve data lineage and traceability so teams can understand where data comes from, how it changes, and where it is used.
- Define and track data quality checks and metrics (e.g., completeness, accuracy, timeliness) for priority datasets; coordinate remediation with owners and engineers.
- Support data classification and protection practices (e.g., sensitivity labeling, handling guidance) in partnership with Data Privacy, Risk, and Security.
- Help implement and improve access and usage governance: clear request/approval pathways, role-based access practices, and audit-friendly documentation.
- Develop governance templates, standards, and lightweight guidance that teams will use (definitions, stewardship playbooks, checklists).
- Deliver enablement: coach data stewards and business users on how to find, understand, and use governed data; run short working sessions as needed.
- Partner with platform and analytics teams to align governance with Azure platform capabilities (e.g., cataloging, monitoring, and reporting tooling).
- Provide concise reporting on governance progress, risks, and adoption (e.g., coverage of cataloged assets, glossary maturity, and data quality trends).
- Lead the creation and rollout of Data Sharing Agreements (DSAs) with application/business owners to govern data shared into and across the Azure data platform, including the required template, approvals, and tracking.
What we pay
$120,000 - $145,000
Qualifications & Experience
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Information Systems, Computer Science, Data/Analytics, Business, or a related field.
Experience
- 7+ years of experience in data governance, data management, data quality, analytics operations, or related roles.
- Proven ability to lead governance execution, setting up processes, driving adoption, and working across business and technology teams.
- Experience implementing or operating a data catalog and glossary (Microsoft Purview experience preferred).
- Experience defining and tracking data quality rules and coordinating remediation with data owners and engineering teams.
- Experience working in a regulated environment (financial services, insurance, or similarly regulated industry) is strongly preferred.
- Experience working on finance and regulatory projects. (strongly preferred)
Core Skills
- Strong stakeholder management and communication skills; able to translate between business needs and technical implementation.
- Strong documentation and facilitation skills (definitions, standards, meeting materials, action tracking).
- Practical understanding of data lifecycle topics: ownership, stewardship, data quality, metadata, lineage, privacy, and access controls.
- Comfort working with data tools and concepts (e.g., tables, dashboards, data pipelines) without needing to be a full-time engineer.
- Highly organized, able to run multiple workstreams, and comfortable driving progress in ambiguous environments.
Technical Skills (Preferred)
- Microsoft Purview (cataloging, glossary, lineage, and governance workflows).
- Working knowledge of Azure data platform concepts (data lake/warehouse/lakehouse patterns).
- Ability to query data using SQL at a basic-to-intermediate level for validation and investigation.
- Familiarity with Power BI or similar reporting tools for governance and data quality reporting.
- Familiarity with common governance frameworks and practices (e.g., DAMA-style concepts, stewardship operating models).
Growth Opportunity
This role is expected to lead governance execution from day one. As the program scales, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to expand scope and responsibility—shaping the enterprise governance operating model, owning governance metrics and reporting, and potentially building a small governance team to support the platform’s growth.
