Position Overview

The ophthalmic technician is a mid-level ophthalmic personnel that works under the direction of an ophthalmologist. The ophthalmic technician performs ophthalmic testing, administers ophthalmic medications and collects data for interpretation by the ophthalmologist. The Ophthalmic technician has a broad range of ophthalmic knowledge and mastery of core skills within the scope of practice of a Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) and a Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT) and in accordance with hospital/departmental/unit policies and procedures and professional standards.

  • All new HGH employees will be required to obtain and provide a satisfactory Police Records Check dated within six (6) months from the date of issue.

What we are looking for

  • Certificate Program in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO in COA/COT or equivalent)
  • 1 to 3 years of experience in Ophthalmology
  • Ability to operate equipment related to Ophthalmology
  • Ability to prioritize and manage daily changes
  • Computer skills
  • Equipment maintenance skills
  • Ability to work in an environment with frequent and uncontrollable interruptions to workflow (phones, patients, various priorities…)
  • Ability to communicate effectively with patients and colleagues;
  • Ability to prioritize duties and to utilize time efficiently;
  • Demonstrated critical thinking, decision making and problem solving skills to plan and organize appropriately, anticipate, prevent, and resolve problems;
  • Ability/experience with clinical administrative software such as EPIC;
  • Customer service oriented approach;
  • Effective communication in both French and English;
