About the role

The City of Edmonton is currently recruiting energetic and charismatic individuals who value strong customer service and engaging and interacting with citizens of all walks of life. Reporting to the Civic Events Program and Events Coordinator and the Heritage Amphitheatre Program and Events Coordinator, the Civic Events Program and Event Host provides a welcoming experience to all that are attending the Civic Centre and Heritage Amphitheatre through the activation of programs and amenities including City Hall program and events, City Hall Fountain, Civic Centre programs and events, Heritage Amphitheatre programs and events, and festival and event support.

The Civic Centre includes but is not limited to; City Hall, City Hall Plaza, Sir Winston Churchill Square, and Centennial Plaza, however staff may be required to work at other civic events and locations across the city including the Heritage Amphitheatre located within Hawrelak Park. Staff may also be required to support Civic events throughout the downtown and river valley parks. Events may include parades, runs/walks, concerts, and from large events to small gatherings. The staff’s ability to liaise with citizens, amenity staff, and stakeholders is crucial to the delivery of a successful operation and enjoyment for all within the Civic Centre, Heritage Amphitheatre and throughout the city.

What you will do:

  • Monitor facility amenities and/or events to ensure compliance to policies and procedures for safety and security of attendees
  • Support the general public, tour groups, school users and other program users on proper use of amenities during spontaneous use and events with a high degree of professionalism and political acumen
  • Assists with program participation and with pre-program training courses, in-service programs etc., as required
  • Serve as a primary point of contact for residents and visitors by providing general information, proactive wayfinding assistance, and administering intercept surveys to gather valuable user feedback
  • Support programming partners with the delivery and setup of materials, including signage and equipment, while ensuring all spaces are maintained and restored to their original condition post-event
  • Respond to emergency situations and be proactive in activating emergency services when needed. Assist onsite security and other staff in emergency response by assessing and identifying security incidents and relaying information to onsite security
  • Maintain statistics, and record data on program areas such as participant numbers, material usage and supplies inventory as required by supervisors
  • Provide minor ground maintenance and clean-up activities such as sweeping up debris, moving program materials such as fencing, garbage cans and signage. Setting up and taking down event materials
  • Maintain accurate and detailed records of all emergency and security-related incidents, ensuring comprehensive documentation is completed and filed accordingly
  • Perform additional duties as needed

Qualifications:

  • Completion of Grade 12, with an emphasis on experience in working with the general public, tour groups, children and other program users

Skills required for success:

  • Basic knowledge of recreational program objectives as well as departmental policies and procedures
  • Ability to lead, organize, instruct and supervise group activities in accordance with designated program requirements
  • Skill in the use of material and equipment used in programs
  • Experience working with Google Workspace (Gmail, Google Docs, Google Sheet)
  • Experience in Customer Service, Public Education, Children’s Programming or Hosting Events
  • Excellent communication skills to effectively coach staff and interact with the public and community partners
  • Strong time-management skills with the ability to prioritize tasks and manage a "roller coaster" event cycle
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and justify decisions in a high-profile, politically sensitive environment
  • Creativity and problem-solving skills to rebuild downtown vibrancy and respond to the needs of diverse populations

Conditions of Employment:

  • Valid Intermediate First Aid and CPR Certificate
  • Successful candidates will be fit for a respirator, and compliance with the City of Edmonton's Code of Practice for Respiratory Protective Equipment, including medical monitoring, is a requirement of this position
  • Hire is dependent on Police Information Check with Vulnerable Sector Check satisfactory to the City of Edmonton, and there may be a cost associated with this requirement

Work Environment:

  • Working majority of the time in outdoor conditions
  • The weekly hours of work for this position are currently under review and may change at a future time. Any changes will be made in accordance with the City of Edmonton/Civic Service Union 52 collective agreement and the incumbent will be notified in advance

Successful candidates may be eligible for recall in the 2027 season Up to 15 temporary part-time positions for up to 5 months Hours of Work: Up to 39 hours per week. Includes evenings and weekends

Salary Range: $22.860 - $27.706 (Hourly)
