Job Summary

The Senior Enterprise Observability Architect will play a crucial role in defining NAV CANADA's observability and monitoring strategy by gaining deep visibility across NAV CANADA’s technology landscape aligning telemetry with actionable insights, business goals, and objectives to ensure the performance, resiliency, scalability, and fault tolerance of NAV CANADA’s business and operational systems. This individual is responsible for engaging with business and technology stakeholders to analyze and document the current state observability architecture by examining existing monitoring solutions, tooling, processes, procedures and establishing future state architectures which are aligned with industry standards, emerging technology trends, and NAV CANADA's future technology direction. The Senior Enterprise Observability Architect will collaborate with business and technology stakeholders develop technology standards, patterns, and guidelines which are aligned with NAV CANADA’s business goals and objectives by possessing a deep understanding of NAV CANADA’s environments, business, and operational systems. The Senior Enterprise Observability architect will also evaluate emerging technologies, tooling, and market trends to identify opportunities for innovation and technological enhancements.

This role requires excellent communication skills, a strategic mindset, and the ability to balance technical expertise with business acumen to drive impactful outcomes across the organization.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Documents and analyzes current state observability architectures while defining the desired future state to establish a clear roadmap for technological evolution and alignment with the business vision.
  • Develops architectural standards, patterns, and guidelines to accelerate solution design, drive consistency, safety, and sustainability across the enterprise.
  • Develops and contributes to technology strategies which transform the current state observability architecture to support business goals and objectives in alignment with the future technology direction.
  • Engages with business and technology leaders to understand business objectives, challenges, and requirements, ensuring the observability architecture aligns with both technical and business needs.
  • Provides architectural guidance and oversight for large-scale strategic projects ensuring alignment with technology standards, patterns, blueprints.
  • Monitors emerging technologies and industry trends, evaluating their potential impact and recommending innovative solutions to drive business value.
  • Ensures architectural designs comply with relevant regulations, security standards, organizational policies, mitigating risks effectively.
  • Fosters a culture of learning by mentoring teams, promoting architectural standards, best practices, and sharing architectural knowledge across the organization.

Job Requirements

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in the field of Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or an acceptable combination of education, experience, and training.

Experience:

  • A minimum of five to eight (5-8) years hands-on experience designing, deploying, and integrating complex observability and monitoring solutions in an enterprise environment with a minimum of (3) years in a safety critical environment.
  • A minimum of three (3) years of experience authoring technology standards, patterns, or blueprints.
  • Leadership experience in managing multiple, large, cross-functional teams or projects, and influencing senior level management and key stakeholders.

Knowledge

  • Advanced knowledge of full-stack observability concepts and principles (unified telemetry across all layers of the technology stack as it applies to application, network, infrastructure, and cloud solutions).
  • Deep understanding of enterprise network, data center (compute, storage, virtualization), hybrid cloud, cloud native, and microservice architectures.
  • Understanding of system level and business observability KPIs (including, but not limited to response time, latency, error rates, resource utilization, uptime, saturation, MTTR, MTBF, MTTD, MTTF).
  • Advanced knowledge of performance monitoring, response, and alerting techniques (Proactive alerting, data collection and analysis).
  • Advanced knowledge of monitoring and logging protocols (i.e. SNMPv3, Modbus, Syslog, NetFlow, IPFix, WMI, API).
  • Knowledge of Infrastructure as Code (IoC), configuration management tools (i.e. Ansible, Terraform), and CI/CD pipelines is considered an asset.
  • Deep understanding of NAV CANADA’s industry, including market trends, competitive landscape, and regulatory requirements, with the ability to adapt solutions accordingly.

  • Ability to work both independently and in a team environment, supporting client architectural needs and leading collaboration efforts, sharing new ideas, and supporting the achievement of collective team goals.
  • Proficiency in creating architectural standards, diagrams, roadmaps, and patterns to guide implementation teams effectively.

Working conditions:

  • Hybrid (3 days in office per week) - This position is based in Ottawa at the NAV CANADA Technical Systems Center (TSC) located at 280 Hunt Club Road, Ottawa, K1V 1C1.
  • Travel may be required on occasion.
