Director, Payroll
About the role
We are currently seeking a talented and experienced leader to join our team of dedicated professionals within JDI Finance Shared Services. We have the following opportunity available for a Director of Payroll. This critical leadership role oversees the enterprise-wide payroll function, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and exceptional service delivery across multiple business divisions. The position provides significant opportunities for strategic impact, continuous improvement, and cross-functional collaboration.

Provide strategic leadership and direction for payroll operations across JDI’s multi‑industry, multi‑jurisdictional business units.

Lead, mentor, and develop a high‑performing payroll team, including payroll managers and specialists.

Ensure accurate and timely processing of weekly and bi‑weekly payrolls for hourly, salaried, unionized, and non-unionized employees.

Oversee payroll governance, internal controls, audits, and compliance with all federal, provincial, and state regulations.

Manage complex payroll activities including year‑end processing (T4s, T4As, W‑2s, ROEs), garnishments, pension adjustments, and collective agreement requirements.

Establish and maintain standardized payroll processes, documentation, and service-level expectations.

Partner with HR, Finance, Labour Relations, and business leaders to ensure payroll alignment with organizational goals.

Oversee payroll system integrations, upgrades, and data integrity within HRIS and payroll platforms.

Lead continuous improvement initiatives focused on automation, process optimization, and enhanced reporting capabilities.

Provide high-quality payroll reporting, analytics, and insights to support operational and financial decision-making.

Serve as the primary advisor to executive leadership on payroll operations, risk mitigation, and regulatory changes.

Bachelor’s degree in Business, Accounting, Human Resources, or related field; advanced education considered an asset.

10+ years of progressive payroll experience, with at least 5 years in a leadership capacity within a large, complex organization.

Payroll Certification from the National Payroll Institute (PCP/CPM) strongly preferred.

In-depth knowledge of Canadian payroll legislation, taxation, and compliance across multiple provinces; U.S. experience an asset.

Demonstrated experience working with enterprise HRIS/payroll systems (SAP, Workday, UKG, or similar).

Exceptional attention to detail and a strong commitment to data integrity.

Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage competing priorities and deadlines.

Sound judgment, diplomacy, and the ability to manage confidential and sensitive information.

Strong communication, collaboration, and stakeholder engagement skills.

Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, PowerPoint, Excel).
