About the role

As a Senior Electrical Engineering Designer on Irving Oil’s Engineering Services team, you will complete drawings and designs for various electrical installations. Your goal will be to serve as a recognized SME, both inside and outside the organization by checking various types of electrical design deliverables such as heat tracing drawings, electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, procurement requisitions, effort hours estimates, Material Take Offs, Engineering Work Orders (EWOs), etc. for the almost 200 projects completed each year required to keep refining operations running smoothly and efficiently. Your success will be demonstrated as a trusted and collaborative expert on how designs impact the business overall.

Your Responsibilities

  • Lead complex projects for cross discipline designs, development, maintenance, research, installation, and equipment performance
  • Check work of more junior Designers as well as provide working supervision, guidance, and assistance to Engineering Designers
  • Ensure layouts conform to functional requirements and that suitable components and equipment are identified for each phase of the project
  • Lead design concept reviews; work with different modelling techniques and cross functional teams to find the best solution
  • Coordinate As-Is drawings; ensuring complete, current packages for Documentum are available and easily accessible for future use
  • Perform field visits to collect measurements and other field data
  • Prepare Engineering Work Packages (EWOs), Bills of Material (BOMs), labour hour estimates, materials estimates, other cost estimates, engineering schedules, Scopes of Work (SOWs), Scopes of Services (SOSs)
  • Coordinate the overall planning of the detailing approach and work with engineers to define and re-define the scope of work for more complex projects
  • Monitor and inspect construction operations to ensure compliance to engineering design, site standards, and specifications
  • Attend various project reviews: P&ID, HAZOP (Hazard and Operability), PHA (Process Hazard Analysis), LOPA (Layers of Protection Analysis), What-If, etc.

Your Skills

  • Ability to act as a key influencer in final decisions
  • Investigate and analyze operational problems; recommend workable solutions
  • Good communication skills, both oral and written
  • Work collaboratively and learn from others
  • Must be flexible and able to multi-task effectively
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent computer skills; should be familiar with common discipline design software programs such as Autocad
  • Able to work in the field: this includes working in year-round weather conditions, able to bend, climb, stoop, kneel, crawl, etc. and able to lift up to 20lbs. You must be comfortable with high elevation climbing, working at heights, and in enclosed spaces. You must be able to wear full PPE as required by safety standards

Your Experience

  • Post-secondary education in Electrical Engineering Design technology, or equivalent experience
  • 10+ years of experience as an Electrical Engineering Technologist, discipline designer or closely related field
  • Experience with Electric Heat Tracing design is an asset
  • NBSCETT certified, or eligible in the province of NB, is an asset
