Introduction
Atura Power operates the largest fleet of combined cycle power plants in Ontario. Our facilities are located across the province including Napanee, Halton Hills, Toronto, and Windsor. This position is a temporary role on 6-month contract, located at Portlands Energy Centre in Toronto. Reporting to the Manager, Commercial Projects & Settlements, is to provide essential technical coding and system integration support for the commercial strategy tools required to align the new asset with our existing fleet operations and market systems. In addition, this role would be trained and served as a back-up for executing the commercial strategy in real-time with respect to both electricity and gas market aspects of the Atura Power fleet.

Job Description
Executing the commercial market aspects of the Atura Power business in accordance with approved policies, budgets and business plans, the successful candidate will be responsible for:

Support projects to develop, enhance, and automate commercial operations tools and processes using programming languages such as Python, VBA, and SQL

Providing real-time market analysis to assist in the development of daily and longer-term asset optimization strategies
-
Ensuring full compliance with IESO market rules, regulatory requirements, and risk policies
-
Interfacing with IESO to manage market rules and regulatory compliance, settlements verification and participation in IESO stakeholder events
-
Familiarize with gas and power commercial activities in relation to IESO contract obligations and the electricity market
-
Maintaining safe and responsible work habits and enjoy working in a close-knit team
-
Being a member of a larger team, participating in overall plants safety initiatives and contributing to the overall success of the organization
-
Trained to potential offer available generating capacity into the IESO market, subject to plant operating and dispatch constraints and market conditions, interacting closely with operating and maintenance staff
-
Trained to potential manage the delivery and balancing of natural gas supply using a suite of available transportation, distribution, storage, and balancing services
-
Trained to potential work closely with plant operations and maintenance departments on all aspects of commercial operations and coordination of dispatch activity
The successful candidate will learn the following skills & expertise:
Electricity
-
Understanding of the Ontario Electricity Market administered by the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO), from the perspective of a power generator, including the following aspects:
- Market participation through offering, scheduling, and dispatch
- IESO market rules
- Communication protocols with the IESO
- Settlements of IESO market and contract revenues and production

Understanding of the operation of Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) type power plants
-
Understanding of the operation of Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT) type power plants fueled by natural gas
Gas
- Understanding of the natural gas market in Ontario, from the perspective of gas fired generators, including the following aspects:
- Purchase and sale of large quantities of natural gas on a daily basis, including deal capture and settlements with NGX and gas suppliers
- Assessment of new and existing gas services provided by Union Gas, TCPL, and Enbridge Gas Distribution for the management of gas deliveries and imbalances
- Scheduling and nomination of gas deliveries along pipelines operated by Union Gas, TCPL, and Enbridge Gas Distribution
- Scheduling and nomination of gas into and out of storage and balancing accounts to manage supply and consumption
Required Qualifications

Undergraduate Bachelor’s degree in Computing/Software, Engineering, Math, or relevant field

Proven experience programming and developing code in Python, VBA, and SQL
-
Proficiency in Microsoft Excel for data management and software tools to support commercial activities (VBA, SQL)
-
Experience or strong interest in electricity and/or gas markets
-
Ability to quickly learn market and operational concepts to effectively apply programming skills in the role
-
Strong business and commercial acumen
-
Excellent interpersonal and teamwork skills
-
Analytical and proven problem-solving skills
-
Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
If required, this role might subject to shift rotation consisting of off-business hours (evenings, nights, and weekend) shifts. Expected shift schedule will be determined and communicated to candidates before candidates are selected.
Contract role: 12 months
Time off Entitlements: 3 weeks (15 days) paid vacation per year
