Position Overview Reporting to the VP, Operational Risk, the Operational Risk Director is responsible for ensuring effective operational risk programs are in place and successful within the lines of business. The Operational Risk Director leads the development, implementation and oversight of the company’s Operational Risk Management Program company-wide. This role is responsible for providing operational risk leadership including providing guidance to Senior Management for multiple lines of business on Program practices and methodologies, thus delivering assurance to Clients, Employees, the Leadership team, Directors, Shareholders and Regulators that business risks are being measured and mitigated.
Responsibilities In conjunction with VP Operational Risk, continuously enhance and manage the Risk Management Program to independently challenge and provide oversight activities, using the tools (RCSA, KRI, ORE, BAR) documented in the Operational Risk Management framework, that objectively identify, measure, monitor and report operational risk on an enterprise basis per OSFI E21 Guideline;
- Design, lead the implementation and sustainment of operational risk management programs and practices.
- Provide oversight and challenge of the 1LOD’s identification, assessment, and management of Operational Risk.
- Support the development, and challenge, of management action plans to address identified deficiencies.
- Perform an independent risk assessment by analyzing errors and significant events challenging the business’ identification of root causes and action plans to prevent future re-occurrence.
- Assess the effectiveness of the operational risk management program, including internal controls, by participating in the operational control testing program, to ensure mitigation of risk across all lines of business.
- Provide risk reporting on a detailed or aggregate level to the VP, Operational Risk and other senior leaders, or members of the Leadership team on the operational risk profile, including compliance with risk limits, reporting on key risk indicators and operational risk events, and emerging trends.
- Review and challenge the Business Process Change Assessments in terms of compliance with corporate policies and procedures, obtaining satisfaction that operational risks have been appropriately assessed and addressed.
- Educate and train business units on risk management frameworks and associated risk policies and standards.
Business Continuity
- Participate in the execution and maintenance of the enterprise-wide Business Continuity Program, including ISO reviews and assisting with the documentation of the lines of business procedures associated with business resiliency.
Additional Accountabilities
- Keep abreast of industry practices, applicable laws, guidelines and regulations.
- Promote a culture of risk awareness, compliance and control as an integral part of effectively managing operational, legal, regulatory and reputational risk.
- Work with Internal Audit and Operational Control to ensure lines of business compliance with enterprise-wide risk appetite.
- Provide second line oversight and challenge on corporate projects and governance committees.
- Collaborate with team and stakeholders to continually enhance the Operational Risk Program; delivering solutions that work for internal clients, supporting a goal-completion valued culture and aligning goals and priorities to strategic direction of CIBC Mellon.
Qualifications
- University degree, or equivalent
- 5 to 7 years progressive risk management experience in the financial services and securities industry
- Completion of Canadian Securities Course and/or CFA Level 1
- Knowledge of the products and services of the global securities services and trust industries
- Project Management experience, leading projects across diverse business units
- Must have excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Must be able to adapt to a changing environment.
- Demonstrate ability to work independently, apply judiciousness and manage deliverables on time.

Job Specific Competencies
- The base salary range for this position is between $120,000 - $168,000 dependent on relevant experience.
