About the role
Who We Are
Mesa is the operations-first accounting firm.
Most business owners don't look at their books until tax season. By then, they're looking at a year's worth of decisions they can't undo. A monthly close takes an hour to review and gives you 12 chances to course-correct instead of zero. We're built around that math.
We work with Canadian small and medium-sized business owners — operators who are great at running their business but didn't start it because they love spreadsheets. Our job is to give them accurate, timely financials and help them actually use the numbers.
We're fully remote, fixed-fee, and QBO-first. No surprise bills. No year-end-only relationships. No keeping clients dependent on their accountant to understand their own numbers.
Why Mesa
-Fully remote— work from home, permanently -Fixed-fee model— no billable hour pressure, just good work -Room to grow— we're expanding and the people who join early move up -Health, dental, and vision benefits— fully paid -December shutdown— rest, recharge, start the new year fresh -Your opinion matters— we're small enough that good ideas actually get implemented
What the role is
You'll be the person clients rely on to close their books, make sense of their numbers, and flag what needs their attention. This is not a tax-season-only job. Monthly close is the cadence. Advisory conversations are the output.
Specifically:
- Perform monthly closes for a portfolio of Canadian SMB clients
- Prepare and review financial statements (income statement, balance sheet, cash flow)
- Identify variances, flag issues, and communicate findings to clients in plain language
- Manage accounts payable, receivable, payroll reconciliation, and bank reconciliations
- Support CRA compliance — HST/GST filings, year-end prep, T2 working paper prep
- Collaborate with the team on client onboarding and bookkeeping transitions
- Document client-specific processes so nothing lives in one person's head
- Provide vacation and absence coverage across the client portfolio when needed
What you need
- CPA designation — required
- 3+ years of experience managing multiple client files simultaneously
- Strong working knowledge of QBO — this is our primary platform
- Solid grasp of accrual accounting, payroll, bank reconciliations, and Canadian tax obligations (CRA, HST/GST)
- Experience with Dext and Wagepoint
- Clear written and verbal communication — you'll be talking to business owners, not finance people
What you'll bring to the table
- You explain things clearly without dumbing them down. When a client's margin is off, you can tell them why and what to do about it — not just hand them a report and disappear.
- You're organized enough to manage a full client load and proactive enough to flag problems before clients notice them. You learn new tools quickly. You work well independently and don't need a lot of hand-holding.
- Reliable internet connection (minimum 100Mbps up/down) — you're fully remote, so this matters.
A note on how we work
Compliance is the floor, not the finish line. We're not interested in just filing returns and moving on. If a client's numbers tell a story, we want to help them read it.
If that's how you think about accounting, we should talk.
Job Types: Full-time, Part-time
Pay: $48,975.43-$92,720.11 per year
Expected hours: 20 – 40 per week
Benefits:
- Dental care
- Vision care
Work Location: Hybrid remote in Montréal, QC H3L 2J4
