Job Description POSITION PURPOSE SUMMARY: The Community Service Worker will report directly to the Community Ministries Director and provide support to ongoing community service programs such as the food bank, street ministry, voucher program, clothing program, and more.
Tasks & Accountabilities The incumbent may perform all, some, or similar range of duties.
The Community Service worker is involved in all areas of Encounter Community Services such as:
- Encounter Food Bank
- Gluten Free Food Share
- Jack Frost Street Ministry
- Camp Courage
- Emergency Disaster Services
- Recycle Your Cycle
- Flea Market
- Back to School Drive and Distribution
- Household and Clothing Voucher Program
- And more.
Working directly under the supervision and mentorship of the Community Ministries Director, the Community Service Worker will be responsible for:
- Receiving, sorting, and storing food bank donations
- Registering food bank guests using Link2Feed
- Hosting food bank guests through our shopping-model food bank
- Preparing the food bank café
- Set-up and tear down for all events as a part of a larger team
- Food preparation for meal programs
- Serving street-involved or houseless populations meals, clothing, and social connection during the Jack Frost Street Ministry program.
- Cleaning and maintaining the Community Response Unit vehicle used for Jack Frost
- Assisting with event planning for our back-to-school supply drive
- Assist with the general maintenance, tidiness, and organization of our two locations
- Assist with sorting and organizing clothing donations.
- Assisting with different community distribution events such as Recycle Your Cycle, or Back to School Supplies.
- Working directly with clients.
- Working with and potentially directing a team of volunteers.
- Assist with volunteer recruiting for events and activity efforts, as well as all necessary support, resources, and supplies.
- Actively participates in meetings with Community Ministries Director, inclusive of PEAC.
- Assist with administrative tasks such as communication with clients through phone and email, creation of promotional materials, and more.
- Perform administrative tasks that support program objectives in collaboration with other staff.
- Other tasks as assigned.
Working Conditions
- Working environment is typically inside and in generally agreeable conditions. There will be some required work outside or in the Community Response Unit vehicle each week.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
- This job requires reaching, bending, and stooping frequently, working in a standing position for periods of time.
- Dealing with people with challenging behaviour and verbal abuse.
- Travel within/out city may be required.
- Willingness to work evenings and weekends to meet program needs.
- Flexibility in work schedule is required based on programming schedules.
Education, Experience And Qualifications
- Willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
- Work in compliance with The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures.
Education, Qualifications And Certifications
- An interest in working in community service and ability to do hands-on manual labour
- Good computer skills and experience using Microsoft Office Suite.
- Knowledge of community-based resources and experience networking with government and social service agencies considered an asset.
- Understanding for individuals of diverse social and cultural backgrounds.
Skills And Capabilities
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to coach and motivate volunteers.
- Self-starter who requires minimal supervision.
- Ability to represent the local Salvation Army within the community.
- Completion of a Criminal Record Check and Vulnerable Sector Search
All Necessary Education And Training Will Be Provided, Including
- Link2Feed system training
- Workday Training
- Food Banks Canada Safe Food Handling
- Trauma informed care
- On-the-job training for each task.
Compensation The target hiring range for this position is $16.50 to $16.90 with a maximum of $20.28.
Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
