CanNorth is seeking a highly motivated field botanist to work with our talented and innovative multidisciplinary team in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. This contract position will begin May 4, 2026, and end August 31, 2026, with the possibility of extension depending on workload and fall weather conditions. Responsibilities in this contract position will include:

  • Assisting with conducting plant identification and inventory surveys, rare plant surveys, weed surveys, rangeland and riparian health assessments, and forest ecosite classification.
  • Conducting field work, typically as a crew member (however, independent work may be required, project-dependent).
  • Assisting with completion of environmental site evaluations, including identifying site characteristics such as habitat, dominant vegetation, presence of weedy/invasive species, topography, etc.
  • Assisting with the classification of wetlands/riparian areas.
  • Support with project planning and logistics as required (often from inception to execution of field work, daily or monthly reporting, etc.).
  • Data management and technical writing (e.g., assisting with quality assurance/quality control, daily field reports, summary updates).
  • Helping in the warehouse with equipment, maintenance, mobilizing/demobilizing trucks, etc.

Requirements:

  • Pursuing or have recently completed a university degree (undergraduate or graduate) in biology, environmental science, or related natural sciences (or other associated discipline).
  • Minimum 4 months of past field experience completing vegetation inventory surveys (or similar).
  • Skills and training in plant morphology and taxonomy, including use of a dichotomous key.
  • Knowledge of local flora of Saskatchewan is considered an asset, including plant species of conservation concern.
  • This position entails a substantial amount of field work; thus, applicants must be willing/able to be away for extended periods of time.
  • Field work will regularly require working in rugged terrain; strong outdoor skills, experience working in remote areas, and experience operating trucks with loaded trailers, ATVs, UTVs, and boats is an asset.
  • Safety certifications such as First Aid, ATV, and /or UTV are considered a bonus.
