The Risk Management Claims Adjuster is responsible for investigating, evaluating and finalizing claims advanced against the corporation on a national level. The adjuster must have a thorough knowledge of the Corporation and the operations of the various subsidiaries. The adjuster should have (or be very close to obtaining) the CIP - Chartered Insurance Professional - designation from the Insurance Institute of Canada.
Here's where you;ll be focusing:
- Manage diverse levels of claims, primarily liability.
- Limit solicitor involvement by being attentive and building a rapport with injured customers
- Work independently to conduct claim investigations; obtain and evaluate defense materials and source any documentation that may assist in defending claims.
- Participate as in daily meetings with Claims Coordinator / Claim Analyst to troubleshoot defense tools, ideas and share experience.
- Review and interpret internal documentation such as leases and contracts (with guidance from the Manager) as they pertain to a claim.
- Determine liability and course of action:
(a) If no liability found, communicate denial to customer and/or solicitor with professional and competent “without prejudice” oral or written communication and prepare to defend.
(b) If liability or degree of liability is found, evaluate claim, set reserves, obtain information to support claim, negotiate settlement as soon as possible and obtain proper release documentation.
- Keep apprised of changes involving the Occupiers Liability Act and other rules of civil litigation on a national level
- Keep defense costs to a minimum by obtaining waiver, then legal opinions only to resolve files
- When defense counsel is hired (upon approval from Manager); establish defense strategy early on, ensure claim stays on track and counsel is firmly guided to follow the corporate litigation strategy.
- Insurer to be notified of claims with potential to exceed our Self Insurer Retention (SIR) upon approval of Manager
- When opportunities present, attend district meetings of field personnel to train location management on proper investigative techniques and loss prevention practices
- Monitor loss prevention issues and communicate with National Manager to source potential strategies to minimize risk and source creative ways to communicate loss prevention strategies to field personnel
- Produce quarterly open liability claim status report for Manager and generate and distribute claims status reports to operations executives
- Liaise and collaborate with shoppers/our customers, internal departments/employees and external companies, including Crombie REIT (i.e. Insurers, Adjusters, Legal, Consultants, Finance, Construction & Property Management)
What you have to offer:
- An Undergraduate Degree and a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience
- Completed or working towards CIP designation
- Strong organizational skills
- Solid computer knowledge of Microsoft Office, including Outlook, Word and Excel
- Strong negotiation skills, confident nature, diplomatic, team player
- Works well independently, ability to meet deadlines and work under pressure.
- Professional oral and written communication skills
- Courteous and friendly customer service skills
- Ability to interpret Provincial legislation and case law.
