About the role

Company Description Taproot Community Support Services provides personalized, culturally responsive support to children, youth, adults and families across British Columbia, Alberta and Ontario. With approximately 815 employees, we support more than 2,400 individuals and families through community based programs rooted in a simple idea: Strength in People. Taproot is a certified B Corp and holds accreditation or certification through CARF, CET and CAC. In 2025, Taproot became employee-owned through an Employee Ownership Trust, helping ensure the organization remains purpose-driven, Canadian-owned and rooted in the people who make our work possible.

Position Summary Taproot is seeking an experienced, values-aligned candidate for the role of Board Member. This role provides governance oversight, strategic guidance and fiduciary stewardship as Taproot continues to grow as an employee-owned organization. A Board Member brings independent judgment, governance experience and a strong commitment to Taproot’s purpose. They help ensure the organization remains financially sustainable, accountable to its obligations and focused on high-quality, culturally responsive support. The role requires a clear understanding of the difference between governance and operations. The Board sets direction, oversees the CEO, monitors organizational performance and risk, and helps safeguard Taproot’s purpose, values and long-term sustainability.

Key Responsibilities The Board Member will: Provide governance oversight of Taproot’s strategy, risk and long-term sustainability. Review and approve major plans, budgets and organizational priorities. Monitor financial, operational, quality and impact performance. Oversee and evaluate the CEO. Support prudent financial stewardship, regulatory compliance and accountability. Understand Taproot’s Employee Ownership Trust model and the Board’s role within that structure. Promote governance practices that reflect Taproot’s values, cultural responsiveness and commitment to reconciliation. Attend and actively participate in Board and committee meetings. Serve on at least one Board committee.

Desired Skills and Experience The ideal candidate is an accomplished professional with strong governance experience and a commitment to ethical, people-centred leadership. They are motivated by Taproot’s purpose and believe that high-quality community support services, employee ownership, social responsibility and financial sustainability can strengthen one another.

Core Competencies Include: Governance and accountability: sound judgment, fiduciary responsibility and ethical, transparent governance. Strategic and systems thinking: the ability to see the big picture, understand organizational complexity and support long-term planning. Equity, diversity, inclusion and reconciliation: a commitment to inclusive governance, cultural responsiveness and respectful engagement with Indigenous communities connected to Taproot’s work. Financial literacy and oversight: the ability to understand financial statements, budgets, funding models and fiscal stewardship. People, culture and organizational leadership: insight into workforce well-being, organizational culture, leadership and change management. Employee ownership and trust governance: understanding of employee ownership, shared accountability and the distinct roles of Trustees, the Board and management.

Additional Experience Considered an Asset Experience in community, social or health services sectors. Knowledge of employee-owned, purpose-driven or social impact business models. Familiarity with B Corp standards, social impact measurement or purpose-driven governance. Experience in organizational development, human resources or labour relations. Legal expertise in employment, governance, privacy or real estate law. Finance or accounting designation, with experience in audit, compliance or financial oversight. Knowledge of facilities, capital planning, real estate development or asset management. Previous experience as a Board Chair, Committee Chair or senior governance leader.

Time Commitment The Board meets regularly throughout the year, typically quarterly. Directors also serve on a Board committee that meets ahead of Board meetings. Directors can expect approximately 8-10 meetings per year, plus time to prepare.

Remuneration Directors receive an annual stipend.
