Position Overview:
The Recreation Therapist plays a vital role in supporting the well-being of patients by utilizing therapeutic recreation as a means to enhance physical, emotional, and social health. This position is responsible for conducting comprehensive assessments, developing individualized and group interventions, and evaluating outcomes to meet the diverse needs of clients
Principal responsibilities include performing comprehensive assessments of patients and plan individual and group interventions to meet the needs of patients; collaborating in an inter-professional environment in providing patient focused care; contributing to program planning and development; planning, implementing and evaluating Recreation Therapy interventions; complying with, and commitment to, patient safety responsibilities and corresponding centre plans, policies and procedures in order to ensure a safe environment for patients.
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform detailed assessments of clients’ recreational and leisure needs to guide therapeutic program planning.
- Design, implement, and evaluate individualized and group Recreation Therapy interventions that promote functional status, health, personal growth, and quality of life.
- Collaborate with inter-professional teams to ensure patient-focused care and contribute to integrated care planning and development.
- Document behavioral and functional progress, track client outcomes, and revise therapeutic goals and timelines accordingly.
- Participate in program development, quality assurance activities, research, and professional education as required.
- Provide administrative support related to program delivery and documentation.
- Ensure strict adherence to patient safety policies, procedures, and protocols to maintain a safe therapeutic environment.
- Support and facilitate volunteer involvement in program delivery.
- Other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
- Bachelor degree in Recreation and Leisure studies with a major/emphasis in Therapeutic Recreation OR Bachelor degree in a related field (Kinesiology, Physical Education, Psychology or Health Studies) PLUS a post-diploma in Therapeutic Recreation
- Membership in a Provincial Therapeutic Recreation Professional Association
- Basic SFA and CPR – Level C
- Energetic, creative, and thoroughly enjoys working with mental health and addiction clients. Prior work with clients who have been diagnosed with ODC is considered a strong asset.
- Excellent at maintaining professional boundaries with clients.
- Minimum of 2 years experience in the practice of Therapeutic Recreation in a health care setting preferred
- Expertise in planning, implementation and evaluation of Therapeutic Recreation interventions
- Mental Health and Addiction experience an asset
- Excellent organizational and communication skills
- Sound judgment and ability to work independently and in a team setting
- Ability to facilitate and work with Volunteers
