About the role
South Country Co-op is seeking a dynamic and experienced Human Resources Advisor to join our Talent and Culture Team, at our Business Support Centre in Medicine Hat, AB. This role blends full-cycle recruitment leadership with labour relations expertise, supporting our leaders and teams across the organization.

What You’ll Do
As a trusted HR partner, you will provide guidance and leadership across primarily, talent acquisition and labour relations while contributing to broader HR strategies and programs.
You will be responsible for advising and guiding Team Leaders on policies, Employment Standards, Human Rights, Legislation, Collective Bargaining Agreements, and Retention. You will promote employee wellness and work closely with the Human Resources team to support and build a strategic Human Resources and Labour Relations services support model. You will provide coaching advice on corrective actions, and providing leadership on current and new HR systems programs, projects, and processes. In addition, you will ensure alignment to the organization’s mission, vision, and values, focusing on proactively supporting the leadership team in delivering business outcomes and building effective and engaged teams.
Recruitment & Talent Management
Lead and support full-cycle recruitment, onboarding, and retention strategies Oversee and optimize talent acquisition programs, systems, and processes (including ATS and sourcing strategies) Coach leaders on effective hiring, onboarding, and workforce planning practices Strengthen the organization’s employee value proposition and employer brand
Organizational Development
Provide coaching and mentorship to leaders and team members Support a positive, inclusive workplace culture that encourages engagement, innovation, and continuous improvement Develop and foster strong work relationships with the leadership team and actively participate in short and long-term strategic planning and decision-making Align HR programs, policies, and initiatives with organizational values, goals, and business strategy
Labour Relations & Employee Relations
Advise leaders on collective bargaining agreements, employment legislation, and company policies Maintain a thorough understanding of all collective bargaining agreements; ensure consistent interpretation and application of collective agreements and relevant legislation Provide advice and guidance on interpreting and administering the Co-op’s policies and procedures, the collective bargaining agreement, Alberta Employment Standards, Canadian Human Rights, and other applicable legislation Provide coaching and advice on corrective actions, often for sensitive or complex situations Provide support and coach leaders through grievance processes, investigations, and corrective actions
HR Strategy & Operations
Partner with leadership to align HR programs with business goals and Co-op values Support HR systems, metrics, compensation programs, and continuous improvement initiatives Lead or contribute to HR projects, training, and program development
Who You Are
You are looking for a career in Human Resources and:
Undergraduate degree in Business, Commerce, Human Resources, or a related field; CPHR designation (or in progress) is an asset 5+ years of progressive HR experience in a unionized environment; retail experience is an asset Strong knowledge of labour relations, including collective bargaining, grievance handling, arbitration, and collective agreement interpretation Expertise in recruitment strategies, sourcing, and onboarding best practices Excellent interpersonal, communication, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to convey complex information clearly Proven ability to manage sensitive and complex situations with professionalism and discretion Strong organizational, planning, and analytical skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment Proficient in HR systems, applicant tracking systems, and Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook), including advanced document and spreadsheet development Results driven, trustworthy, and committed to delivering high-quality outcomes Collaborative relationship-builder who values diverse perspectives and contributes to shared goals
