THE OPPORTUNITY
We have an opportunity for an Associate Financial Planner to join our award-winning firm in the Vancouver office
WHAT YOU’LL DO
The Associate Financial Planner will join the highly successful Corner Group, team which comprises of seven experienced Portfolio Managers, a Financial Planner and five Investment Assistants. They focus on conservative, long-term investing under a discretionary managed-account format, with approximately $1.8 billion in assets under management. This role also reports to the Vice President, Financial Planning, on practice management as it relates to financial planning.
You will work within a results-oriented team in a collaborative environment with existing clients to collect and analyze information pertinent to clients’ financial goals; prepare and review financial projections using leading software; and offer insight on clients’ financial, tax, retirement and estate planning goals. You will be responsible for providing information to Portfolio Managers and their clients on a variety of tax, estate and personal finance-related queries and strategies.
The ideal candidate is a people person who takes pride in helping clients navigate the complexities of financial planning while incorporating tax strategies. They have a proven history of forming bonds with clients and are proactive and engaged.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Work with Portfolio Managers and clients to identify and clarify client objectives
- Gather client financial information, including on the phone or in person
- Identify the most suitable tools and resources to address client objectives from the menu of services (e.g., financial projection or calculator, pension analysis etc.)
- Complete various analyses and calculations using tools including NaviPlan financial projection software
- Input information into financial projection software; evaluate financial strategies and options; create and edit financial projections; review and interpret results with Portfolio Managers; present financial projections to clients
- Articulate and guide clients through the financial planning process
- Refer to subject matter experts when appropriate (i.e., tax, insurance, estate)
- Document timelines for priority actions
- Manage the financial projection process (e.g., tracking, documentation, follow-up)
COMPETENCIES
- Advising and Coaching – Use knowledge and relationships to assess the needs of internal or external stakeholders, come up with recommendations, and provide coaching or advice that helps them solve challenges, grow and/or reach their goals
- Customer Relationship Management – Build, manage, and nurture client relationships, leveraging CRM tools to track interactions, understand client needs, and deliver consistent service
- Financial Planning – Develop comprehensive financial strategies or recommend products that align resources or assets with clients' long-term goals, balancing income, investments, savings, and expenditures
- Process Improvement and Documentation – Uncover, understand, document, optimize and communicate processes to make them more efficient, effective, and consistent
- Modelling and Forecasting – Envision, build, maintain, update and share financial models and forecasting tools that can project or extrapolate data trends to inform business decision making, planning and strategy
- Regulatory Knowledge – Understand and apply relevant laws, regulations, and standards to meet legal and ethical requirements and reduce risk for clients and the firm
- Risk Assessment – Identify, analyze, and evaluate risks to make decisions and take actions that manage their likelihood and impact on achieving our objectives for the benefit of our clients, firm, and communities
KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE
- Financial planning professional designation is required (i.e., CFP, QAFP, PFP, or other designation recognized under the Financial Services Regulatory Authority (FSRA) of Ontario)
- Professional qualifications/designations such as CPA and/or TEP, and/or experience with the entire life cycle of personal trusts would be a significant asset
- Experience with tax and financial planning strategies required
- Experience with NaviPlan financial projection software required
- In-depth knowledge and interest in personal finance and taxation, including private corporation and trust structures and the taxation of investment income
- Strong business acumen, judgment and savvy; excellent analytical and decision-making skills
- Superior written and verbal communication skills
- Self-motivated with a clear vision of what is required to be part of a high-performance team
- A team player with a proven track record of building trusting and productive relationships with colleagues and clients alike
