Scientific Grant Writer, Snyder Institute for Chronic Diseases
About the role
The Snyder Institute for Chronic Diseases in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Scientific Grant Writer. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 1 year (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.
The Scientific Grant Writer will report to the Institute Director, providing specialized writing, editing, and review support to strengthen research outputs and major funding applications for the Snyder Institute for Chronic Diseases. This role leads the coordination and development of large collaborative grant proposals, supports knowledge translation for diverse audiences, and fosters partnerships to advance the Institute's research priorities and strategic growth
Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):
Major Grant Development, Writing & Review:
- Collaborate with researchers to develop competitive grant proposals aligned with agency requirements
- Conduct literature reviews and synthesize findings to strengthen applications
- Edit and review proposals for clarity, coherence, and competitiveness, providing constructive feedback
- Coordinate timelines, deliverables, and deadlines for major grant submissions with minimal supervision
- Ensure compliance with institutional, ethical, and sponsor guidelines (e.g., Tri-Council)
- Draft letters of support and required documentation to strengthen submissions
- Lead and coordinate writing for large collaborative grants, prioritizing Snyder Core Resource Community needs
- Develop and implement an Institute-level grant development plan
Knowledge Translation & Communication:
- Prepare reports, briefing notes, and presentations for Institute leadership and stakeholders
- Translate complex research into accessible formats for patients, policymakers, and public audiences
- Research funding opportunities and develop materials to advertise (web content, news stories, updates) in collaboration with communications staff
- Finalize and edit materials for dissemination across multiple channels and stakeholders
Project, Liaison & Stakeholder Management:
- Align outputs and activities with Institute leadership priorities
- Conduct needs assessments with research groups and core facilities to identify opportunities and challenges
- Liaise with internal and external offices (Grant Development, Fund Development, industry partners) to secure support for initiatives
- Support Early Career Investigators by aligning infrastructure investments with core facilities
- Provide ad hoc writing and editing support across Institute initiatives
- Support the Institute Director's priority initiatives through administrative and communications tasks
Qualifications / Requirements:
- PhD or PhD candidate in a health-related field OR Master's degree with significant academic writing experience
- Minimum 5 years of experience in research writing, grant development, or academic communications
- Demonstrated authorship in scholarly journals and/or a proven track record of successful grant applications
- Strong understanding of research methods
- Familiarity with Canadian funding agencies (Tri-Council) and academic publication processes
- Excellent written and oral communication skills with the ability to adapt content for diverse audiences
- High proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Acrobat, and cloud-based collaboration platforms
- Strong project management, organizational, and interpersonal skills
- Project Management Professional (PMP) certification is considered an asset
- Affiliation or training in research administration or grant development (e.g., CARA, NORDP, SRAI) is considered an asset
- Ability to work independently, under pressure, and collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams
