Working at CBC
At the CBC, we all have a story to tell. What’s yours?
If you share our passion for Canadian storytelling and you wish to help us engage with individuals and communities across our various digital platforms, this is where you’ll want to be!
Every day, you will have an opportunity to shape the way in which Canadians see themselves reflected in our digital services. Your work will have a direct impact on how millions of Canadians from various communities connect with our products, with one another, and with the diverse voices that make our country so unique.
You will have the opportunity to play a part in enlightening and entertaining Canadians through our innovative work in building the mediums that deliver our content. We are an innovative hub, where the talented professionals we work with are respected and valued for their contributions. Our product teams are vibrant and our work culture strives to achieve the highest standards of diversity and inclusion. We believe that hiring people with different career paths and backgrounds is fundamental in our shared success and in building healthy and highly performant teams. When you join our mission, you are not only shaping the vision of the CBC, but the future of our country.
Why is this role important?
At CBC/Radio-Canada, the Content Distribution team is the heart of our digital presence. We're the foundation that enables other teams to access the content, metadata, and user data needed to deliver CBC's stories and media to Canadians on any digital platform. Our mission is to federate and distribute all of CBC's content including News, Sports, and Podcasts to thousands of Canadians and global aggregators alike through fast, flexible, and scalable services built with a modern stack of Spring, Hibernate, PostgreSQL, and GraphQL.
We're looking for a Lead Developer Supervisor to join us. You'll have the unique opportunity to lead the development of our core content and metadata services. You'll not only contribute to the code yourself, but you'll also guide the team on technical approaches, ensuring our work meets requirements and adheres to best practices in coding and quality engineering.
This is your chance to tackle the unique challenges that come with an immense volume of in-house data, work with new and evolving technologies, and build the APIs that power our entire digital ecosystem. Most importantly, it’s a chance to optimize and elevate the way CBC's content reaches its audience, ensuring a seamless experience on any platform.
Here’s why we should work together:
Our digital teams’ values - collaboration, learning, and continuous improvement - embody who we are as a people-focused, digital-forward employer. We follow lean startup principles and use an Agile approach. Our dedicated people managers work closely with every individual to ensure we are leveraging their strengths, championing their ideas and supporting their pursuit of new skills and their desired career progression.
Here at CBC Digital Strategy & Products, we want you to be happy and feel good at work. It is essential that work be a safe space where our employees are able to share their authentic selves with one another and to push each other to challenge conventions.
What you can expect working in the Content Distribution Team:
As a core team within the Creator Experience Platform (CEP), the Content Distribution Team (CDT) is a collaborative group of talented developers. We work closely with our sister teams, Audio Video Platform (AVP), Storyteller Experience Platform (STEP), and Content Services & Integrations (CS&I), and share our departmental core values of Collaboration, Learning, and Continuous Improvement.
A large part of our day-to-day work involves integrating with and supporting the content management systems developed by these teams. We operate using the Scrum framework, and our mission is to "store and organize CBC's content for distribution to audience-facing teams."
As a Lead Developer Supervisor, you will lead a team of creative and passionate developers solving complex problems. You will gain a deep understanding of how our organization creates, distributes, and consumes content, and you will set development goals that create opportunities for learning and growth. You will also work with an exciting mix of frontend, backend, and middleware technologies.
You will thrive in our team's environment, which is:
- Collaborative and supportive, built on consensus, critical thinking, and open-mindedness.
- Structured around a hybrid work agreement that balances remote flexibility with in-office events and socials.
How you will make an impact
You will be a key player in shaping the future of our content delivery platform. You'll work closely with the team's architects to design sustainable solutions for our large-scale data problems and ensure our products meet industry standards. By keeping our technology stack modern and collaborating with other teams across the organization, you'll guarantee that our entire ecosystem, from UI to data analytics, functions smoothly together. You will also be responsible for writing automated test cases and suites to ensure quality and enable quick deployments.
As a hands-on technical leader, you will lead the design, development, and maintenance of the applications, delivering News, Sports, Podcast and On-demand audio content to our audience. You'll directly coach a team of 5-6 developers, working with them and Quality Engineers to ensure implementations are cohesive and align with our system's technical requirements. You'll champion software development best practices by reviewing pull requests, encouraging knowledge sharing, and fostering a collaborative culture that produces testable, maintainable, and performant code.
What you bring to our team:
- A minimum of five years of experience in a senior development role, with at least two years of experience in a leadership position managing and mentoring a team of developers. You have a proven track record of fostering a high-performing and collaborative environment.
- Deep expertise with Java, including implementing REST API endpoints, and a strong command of backend technologies like Spring and Hibernate.
- Expertise with SQL and relational databases such as Postgres, along with hands-on experience using unit and integration testing frameworks like JUnit.
- A comprehensive understanding of the entire software development lifecycle, from system design to production. You are an expert in Agile methodologies, quality engineering practices, and have hands-on experience driving CI/CD pipelines using tools like Git, Bitbucket, Jenkins, and JIRA.
- A strategic problem-solver who takes ownership of technical challenges, drives innovation by exploring new technologies, and partners with the Product Owner to prioritize technical debt.
- Experience with an HTTP web server environment (e.g., Tomcat) and comfort working on platforms such as Linux and MacOS.
- Exceptional communication skills and a passion for building relationships across the team and with cross-functional partners.
- Possess a degree (BA, BSc) or diploma in a Software Development, Computer Science, or Engineering-related discipline from a recognized learning institution.
- Nice-to-haves: Experience with GraphQL, React, TypeScript, and an interest or background in cybersecurity.
Perks you can look forward to:
- Flexible work schedules, allowing you to prioritize yourself, your family and your work;
- Work from home opportunities;
- Competitive total rewards package;
- 20% of time for innovation, learning and development; wherever your interests lie;
- Opportunities to work with cutting edge technology;
- Opportunities for continued learning and professional development;
- Opportunities to become a member of our Employee Resource Groups;
- Pair programming and mentorship opportunities, where you can learn from the best in the industry and help coach new talent;
- A creative and dynamic work environment, where your ideas and contributions can be heard, valued and respected;
- A supportive management team committed to upholding the highest standards of diversity and inclusivity;
- An environment which favors experimentation and an iterative approach in order to achieve the highest form of technical innovation.
Candidates may be subject to skills and knowledge testing.
We thank all applicants for their interest, but only candidates selected for an interview will be contacted.
As part of our recruitment process, candidates who advance to the next
step will be asked to complete a background check. This includes:
- A mandatory Criminal record check.
- Other background checks may be conducted based on the operational requirements of the position.
