About the role

We are assisting our established and growing client, M.R. Crane Services (MR Crane) , with their search for a Controller in Victoria, BC . This is an excellent opportunity for a hands-on finance leader who enjoys working in a dynamic business environment and wants to play a meaningful role in supporting the continued growth of a successful local company.

MR Crane is a well-respected, family-run business that has been shaping the crane service industry on Vancouver Island since its establishment in 2006. Reporting to and working closely with the Founders, the Controller will oversee the company’s finance and accounting functions while ensuring the financial systems, reporting, and processes support the operational realities of a growing equipment services business.

This role will appeal to a Controller who enjoys understanding how a business truly operates. You are curious, process-driven, and comfortable rolling up your sleeves to solve problems and improve how things work. In addition to leading, coaching, and mentoring a small finance team, you will work alongside experienced financial leadership who provide guidance and strategic support as you continue to build and strengthen the company’s financial processes.

Your day as Controller will include:

-Financial Reporting and Accounting Leadership : Overseeing the preparation of accurate and timely financial statements, maintaining the integrity of the general ledger, and coordinating with external accountants and auditors while ensuring compliance with accounting standards and reporting requirements. -Budgeting, Forecasting and Financial Analysis: Supporting ownership with annual budgets and forecasts, monitoring financial performance, and preparing variance analysis and reporting that helps guide business decisions. -Job Costing and Operational Financial Support: Maintaining job costing and project profitability reporting while providing financial insight into labour performance, equipment utilization, operating costs, and overall business performance. -Cash Flow and Working Capital Management: Monitoring cash flow, supporting cash flow forecasting, and overseeing billing, accounts receivable, and accounts payable processes to ensure strong financial management. -Internal Controls and Financial Process Improvement: Strengthening financial controls, improving processes and systems, and ensuring accurate financial data and asset tracking across the organization. -Financial Partnership and Stakeholder Support: Working closely with ownership, operational leaders, financial institutions, and other partners while providing financial information required for lending, insurance, and strategic decision making.

The position offers a competitive salary of $110,000 – $130,000 (based on related experience and education) plus a comprehensive benefits package and RRSP matching.

Our ideal Controller:

  • Bachelors’ degree in accounting, finance, or a related field; an equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
  • CPA designation or CPA candidate is strongly preferred.
  • Minimum of 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, preferably in construction, equipment rental, or industrial services industries.
  • Proficiency in Office 365 and financial software including SAGE 50, SAGE Intacct.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with operational leadership and ownership.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
