Job Synopsis
This summer student position offers an opportunity to collaborate with Indigenous communities and partners as part of a program with over thirty years of relationship-building in Northern Ontario. Based in Timmins and working with team members across regions, the Assistant supports the Indigenous Neighbours program in creating cross-cultural learning opportunities, building Indigenous-Settler relationships, and assisting Indigenous-led initiatives focused on art, food sovereignty, clean water, and Truth and Reconciliation. Responsive to the evolving needs and requests of Indigenous partners, this role engages in meaningful, diverse work—from coordinating learning experiences and cultural events to supporting the Nika Artisans project and local reconciliation efforts.
This is a 8-week contract position (35 hours/week) based in Timmins, Ontario

MCC supports activities that provide emergency assistance, reduce poverty, and promote healthy communities, sustainable living and alternatives to violence. As an internationally recognized NGO, MCC currently serves in 57 countries with 716 partners, 1133 staff and 40,000 volunteers.

This role is based at 233A Pine Street South, Timmins.
Applicants must be legally able to work in Canada for the duration of their employment. Successful candidates will be required to provide a Police Background Check upon hire.
To be eligible for Canada Summer Jobs, your participant must:
- be between 15 and 30 years old at the start of their summer job
- be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the job and
- be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations
- This includes having a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of their summer job
- If you have a SIN that begins with a 9, you must provide proof of residency. Acceptable documents include:
- a letter from the Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada (IRB) confirming refugee status or
- a valid Permanent Resident Card

Key Responsibilities
Program & Event Coordination

Assist with planning, organizing, and implementing Indigenous Peoples Day events, learning tours, and other engagement opportunities designed to foster cross-cultural understanding in the Timmins area

Support logistics and coordination for the All Nations Grand River Water Walk and other regional partnership initiatives
-
Attend and participate in local Indigenous-led events, initiatives, teachings, and cultural gatherings (including powwows)
Nika Artisans Project Support
-
Help organize and attend Nika Artisan sales events in Timmins and surrounding areas, selling crafts made by Indigenous artisans from Northern Ontario

Create social media content to promote the Nika Artisan project and increase community awareness
Partnership & Communications Support
-
Develop and share stories that promote the Healing Fund and highlight Indigenous-led Truth and Reconciliation initiatives

Assist local partners with projects such as creating and distributing quilts for residential school survivors
-
Support food sovereignty partnership activities and other collaborative projects as they arise
Office & Community Presence

Help maintain the Remembering Place Garden (Kiskisowin) at the Timmins MCC office
-
Work collaboratively with team members in Timmins and participate in weekly online check-ins with the Indigenous Neighbours Program Coordinator

Model respectful engagement, nonviolent peacemaking, and a commitment to reconciliation in all interactions

Perform other duties as assigned in response to emerging partner needs and opportunities

- Participate in a local faith community, being willing to use his/her personal gifts within this community and model nonviolent peacemaking through respectful interaction with others

- Answer inquiries about MCC from constituency and public; communicate MCC's values, articulating the importance of MCC's criteria for workers, all of whom serve as representatives of the Mennonite and Be in Christ churches which support MCC
- Model nonviolent peacemaking through respectful daily interactions with staff and the public
