Clinical Extern, Occupational Therapy
About the role
Sinai Health is seeking a Clinical Extern to join the Occupational Therapy (OT) team.
Occupational Therapy Clinical Externs are employees who provide safe, competent, compassionate and evidence-informed care in response to patient needs. OT Clinical Externs are employed as unregulated care providers to work under the direct supervision of registered Occupational Therapy professionals, as defined by the College of Occupational Therapists of Ontario. This role will adhere to the practice standards of the College, and in accordance to evidence-based practices and standards set by Sinai Health.
In This Role You Will

Gather and/or clean equipment (mobility aids, wheelchairs, pivot disc/ standing transfer aid, oxygen equipment, etc.)

Inform gathering including chart review, gathering pre-admission history from patients and families
-
Manage lines/tubes during mobility (IV’s, drains, catheters, portable oxygen, etc.)

Assist with, or perform independently when assigned:
-
Turning and repositioning
-
Transfers
-
Upper/lower extremity exercises
-
Ambulation/stairs with assigned mobility device
-
Activities of daily living (ADL)
-
Pain management support (e.g. TENS, Contrast baths)
-
Assist with therapeutic group activities
-
Perform administrative tasks (i.e. printing handouts and resources)
-
Communicate with the interprofessional team (e.g. coordinating with most responsible nurse (MRN) for pain meds, attend unit safety huddles)
-
Report back patient observations and status following interventions to appropriate team members as needed
-
Assist with comfort measures and patient safety by ensuring the environment is clean, tidy and free of hazards
-
Respond to call bells and provide patients with assistance as able or notify the appropriate member of the care team what is required

Document care/treatment provided when appropriate on flow sheet/EMR (must be reviewed and co-signed by supervising therapist)

Document workload minutes clearly to reflect patient care provided

Perform other duties consistent with the job classification as required
Job Type: Temporary Part Time (up to 12 months)
Job Requirements Mandatory

Currently enrolled and in the process of completing a MScOT from an accredited program/institution

An official school transcript will be required to interview for this role

Eligible to participate in an externship placement and in good standing with the academic institution
-
Have completed at least one fieldwork/clinical internship
Preferred
- Previous clinical placement or work experience in a hospital or rehabilitation setting considered an asset
Skills and Knowledge
- Proven ability to follow organizational/institutional policies and procedures related to privacy and confidentiality
- Evidence of safe patient handling skills
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (written and verbal); professional, diplomatic and confident with a proven ability to work as a collaborative team member within an interprofessional team
- Demonstrated satisfactory work performance and attendance history
Salary: $23.00/hour
Note: This position requires the availability to work evenings and weekends and at minimum, one shift/week
