About the role

Description

Faculty Services within the Schulich School of Engineering is currently seeking a Full-time Limited Term Mechanical Engineering Technical Specialist for approximately 9 months.

The Technical Specialist will report to the Undergraduate Laboratory Manager of Technical Services and will be a key member of the Technical Services Team, supporting academics, students, and staff. This position is primarily responsible for ensuring the safe and efficient operation of undergraduate teaching laboratories, the Schulich Maker Space, course projects, and technical co-curricular activities. The role includes providing technical support, advice, training, and mentorship to undergraduate students, and, when possible, offering assistance to graduate students and research groups.

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Develop new design projects for courses and significantly contribute to updating existing lab experiences.
  • Participate in the planning, development, and monitoring of new experiments and undergraduate projects.
  • Support activities in the Schulich School of Engineering Maker Spaces.
  • Assist engineering teams and clubs with design and construction projects.
  • Set up equipment and experiments for undergraduate laboratories.
  • Provide practical instruction in undergraduate labs and projects.
  • Acquire, maintain, upgrade, or replace laboratory equipment to ensure readiness for scheduled labs.
  • Maintain safe, organized, and efficient laboratories and projects for students.
  • Order and manage inventory of laboratory materials and supplies.
  • Schedule and coordinate inventory and disposal of capital equipment.
  • Manage chemical inventory and ensure safe disposal of hazardous waste.
  • Configure, maintain, and operate specialized equipment, including testing systems, lab apparatus, and related infrastructure.
  • Ensure compliance with safety, fire, and health regulations in laboratories.
  • Regularly update laboratory hazard assessments and Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) manuals.
  • Respond to equipment malfunctions and emergencies.
  • Maintain first aid training.
  • Provide backup support to other SSE technical staff as needed.
  • Participate in training opportunities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering.
  • A Mechanical Engineering Technology Diploma would be a strong asset
  • Strong hands-on experience and skills, including mechanical aptitude.
  • Experience with digital technologies, computing, electronics, and instrumentation relevant to the field.
  • A deep understanding of the curriculum and the ability to integrate it into design projects and lab experiences.
  • Working knowledge of laboratory testing and analysis techniques.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities effectively.
  • Exceptional analytical, communication, organizational, and technical skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with excellent verbal and written communication.
  • A valid Class 5 driver¿s license (cannot be a graduated license) with proven good driving record (abstract required).
  • Experience with product design processes related to mechanical engineering projects.
  • Familiarity with materials testing procedures.
