Legacy giving at the Alberta Cancer Foundation is more than philanthropy—it’s a promise to future generations. Over the past seven years, our legacy giving program has grown substantially, reflecting the deep commitment of donors who want their impact to last a lifetime. Recognized as a key area of long-term potential, this program plays a critical role in sustaining cancer research, treatment, and care across Alberta. We are looking for a passionate and donor-centered Philanthropy Officer, Legacy to help build on this momentum and partner with donors who want to leave a lasting legacy through a planned gift for the future.
Reporting to the Director, Legacy & Strategic Philanthropy, the Philanthropy Officer, Legacy will build trusted, long-term relationships with confirmed legacy expectancies and hand raising prospects, guiding and stewarding future gifts through an active legacy giving portfolio.
As part of the commitment to the integrated fundraising model, this position is part of the Legacy and Annual Giving team and will regularly engage with donors and prospects at a variety of giving levels and through various activities to inspire consideration and giving for the future and solicit or steward current giving as it arises.
How You'll Contribute
Fundraising & Donor Relations

Manage, cultivate, solicit, and steward an active portfolio of legacy expectancies and hand raiser prospects across all phases of the established moves management process for the program through in-person meetings, phone outreach, email communication, and tailored activities.

Identify planned giving prospects and, in collaboration with the Director, Legacy & Strategic Philanthropy, develop appropriate cultivation and solicitation strategies.

Assess and qualify new hand-raisers, leveraging analytics, CRM insights, and prospect research to prioritize outreach and move prospective donors from exploration through to confirmed legacy gifts.

Lead the cultivation journey for hand raisers who intend to include the Alberta Cancer Foundation in their future estate plans, coordinating outreach and ongoing engagement to ensure donors feel valued, informed, and compelled to continue with their plans.

Lead the donor experience for a portfolio of legacy expectancies, providing tailored stewardship, responsive communication, and meaningful engagement. Cultivate strong relationships to uncover donor stories that can inspire future legacy giving
Acknowledgement & Stewardship
-
Excel in providing timely and thoughtful acknowledgement of all new legacy expectancies, affirming their commitment, confirming their communication preferences, and building a positive donor experience throughout the donor’s commitment.

Develop and implement stewardship and relationship management for assigned donors in collaboration with the Director, Legacy & Strategic Philanthropy

Execute stewardship and cultivation activities as appropriate, including donor tours, meetings and events, and the distribution of impact and progress reports.
Donor Record Keeping
-
Ensure all assigned donor and prospect records are accurate, current, and strategically maintained within Salesforce, including actions, donor history, profiles, and related documentation.

Adhere to the legacy management coordination system and maintain clear, timely documentation of donor interactions.
Professional Knowledge & Development
-
Develop and maintain strong working knowledge of the Foundation’s fundraising objectives and priorities, participating in donor and prospect strategy discussions as required.

Maintain knowledge of gift planning fundraising best practices, gift planning vehicles, and the tax implications of charitable giving, including relevant CRA legislation.

Build networks within the Alberta Cancer Foundation and general philanthropic community to foster understanding of, and confidence in, the Foundation’s mission and impact.

What You'll Bring to the Team
-
Completion of a diploma or degree from an accredited post-secondary institution in a relevant discipline, combined with at least three years of professional experience in fundraising or donor engagement, or an equivalent mix of education and practical experience

Exceptional written and verbal communication abilities, with experience presenting concise, high-level information to elderly donors
-
Proven ability and true desire to build effective donor relationships
-
Solid understanding of fundraising concepts and best practices, along with a strong curiosity for emerging approaches to legacy giving
-
Highly organized and self-motivated, demonstrating creativity, sound judgment, and the ability to deliver quality work and perform well both independently and within collaborative team environments
-
Consistently exercises discretion, professionalism, and sound ethical judgment when managing sensitive and confidential information, in alignment with professional standards and organizational policies
-
In-depth awareness of the philanthropic landscape and giving opportunities across Alberta
-
Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities and perform effectively in fast-paced, deadline-driven environments
-
Possession of a valid driver’s license, reliable access to a personal vehicle and willingness and ability to travel as required to support the responsibilities of the role
-
Background or exposure in areas such as planned giving, legal services, financial or estate planning, or accounting, with a strong working knowledge of the Canadian tax framework, estate planning concepts, and charitable giving options considered an asset
