About the role

Duties:

  • Supports the Civic Engagement and Social Connection Coordinator in the planning and organization of events and activities.

  • Schedules, organizes and delivers on and off-site group activities for LINC and ELT clients, including civic engagement activities, cross-cultural and heritage awareness events, and social network-building opportunities.

  • Plans, organizes and accompanies clients on field trips on a monthly basis to local cultural and heritage sites of interest to increase community bonds.

  • Arranges clients’ visits to public/civic institutions and their participation in community events to learn about community services and civic responsibilities.

  • Conducts outreach and liaises with local community agencies, public/civic institutions, and employers to solicit community participation and networking opportunities for clients.

  • Conducts workshops to coach clients on intercultural sensitivity and networking skills. Prepares clients for effective participation in social connection events.

  • Identifies and invites guest speakers from diverse sectors (public institutions, Indigenous communities, racialized groups, 2SLGBTQI+ communities, people with disabilities) for meet-and-greet sessions and information sessions.

  • Researches and conducts community mapping to capture the breadth of services in the local neighbourhood and to provide LINC and ELT clients with information and referrals to community programs, mentorship and volunteer opportunities.

  • Provides digital orientation and support to clients in enhancing social connections online and educates clients on cyber security.

  • Maintains thorough records and tracks all activities, participant engagement and partnerships. Inputs service data as required.

  • Provides one-on-one counselling and support to clients on civic engagement and community involvement where needed.

Qualifications:

  • Post-secondary education.

  • Minimum of one (1) year experience delivering services to newcomers.

  • Minimum of one (1) year of experience in community outreach, facilitating workshops and organizing events.

  • Minimum of six (6) months of experience providing individual counselling and coaching.

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate with clients experiencing language barriers (Literacy to CLBs 6).

  • Demonstrated experience working in partnerships with community organizations, public/civic institutions and local businesses.

  • Demonstrated experience in public speaking and preparation of presentation materials including the use of PowerPoint.

  • Knowledge and familiarity with cultural, historical and heritage sites throughout the GTA.

  • Knowledge of public/civic institutions, Indigenous communities, racialized groups, 2SLGBTQI+ communities and organizations serving people with disabilities.

  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office 365, MS Teams, the Internet and Social Media including LinkedIn, Instagram and Facebook, is essential.

  • Strong interpersonal, communication, organization and coordination skills.

  • Sensitive to and aware of the social problems facing immigrants.

  • Must be willing to work flexible hours including some evenings and weekends.

  • This position involves accompanying clients on different activities throughout York Region and the broader GTA, therefore, the ability and willingness to travel throughout the GTA is a must.

  • Good command of English both written and oral.

  • Required to provide a valid Vulnerable Sector Screening (VSS) Police check. The VSS must have been completed within the past 6 months.

$32.29 - $33.75 per hour
