Title: Advisor, Capital Assets (Project Accounting)
Locations: Toronto or Houston Duration: 12 Months Pay Rate: $44.49 / Hourly

We are seeking a hands-on accounting professional who enjoys working through complex accounting issues, diving into detailed transaction analysis, and driving issues to resolution. The ideal candidate is comfortable balancing recurring month-end responsibilities with project work, audit support, documentation efforts, and process improvements. They are proactive, detail-oriented, and capable of providing informal leadership and guidance to other team members while maintaining ownership of their own work.
Position Summary
The Advisor, Capital Assets is a senior individual contributor responsible for complex capital project accounting, month-end close activities, financial analysis, audit support, process documentation, and continuous improvement initiatives. This role partners closely with Fixed Assets, Capital Management, Financial Reporting, FP&A, and project teams to ensure the accurate accounting and reporting of capital expenditures and related balances. The successful candidate will be a hands-on accounting professional who is comfortable working through complex issues, researching transactions, improving processes, supporting audits and controls, and providing technical guidance to analysts. This position offers a mix of project accounting and capital asset accounting responsibilities and may include support for fixed asset unitization, depreciation, retirement, and balance cleanup initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
Perform and support monthly close activities related to capital projects and capital assets Prepare and review journal entries, reconciliations, accruals, cost transfers, and supporting documentation Support project accounting activities including project setup, cost tracking, capitalization readiness, and project closeout Analyze and resolve complex accounting issues, balance discrepancies, and transaction exceptions Prepare recurring and ad hoc reporting related to capital projects and capital assets Support AFUDC/IDC calculations and related accounting processes Assist with cost transfer and allocation processes Support audit requests, SOX/internal control requirements, walkthroughs, and testing activities Maintain and enhance RTR process documentation, narratives, and supporting procedures Assist with balance cleanup projects, process enhancement initiatives, and system/process improvements Partner with analysts and provide coaching, technical guidance, and review support Work closely with stakeholders across Accounting, Capital Management, Fixed Assets, Financial Reporting, Regulatory, Tax, and FP&A teams Identify opportunities to improve controls, efficiency, documentation, and reporting accuracy Required Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field 5+ years of progressive accounting experience Strong understanding of accounting principles and month-end close processes Experience with project accounting, capital accounting, fixed assets, or construction accounting environments Strong analytical and problem-solving skills Advanced Excel skills Experience working with large ERP systems such as SAP or Oracle Ability to independently research issues, draw conclusions, and communicate recommendations Strong interpersonal and communication skills Proven ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines in a fast-paced environment Preferred Qualifications: CPA designation or CPA candidate Utility industry experience Experience with capital project accounting and CWIP accounting Experience with project cost transfers, capital accruals, AFUDC/IDC, and capital reporting Experience supporting external audits, SOX controls, and internal control documentation Experience developing or maintaining accounting process documentation and walkthrough materials Experience leading or supporting process improvement initiatives Experience coaching or mentoring junior accounting team members Nice-to-Have Experience: Candidates with any of the following experience are strongly preferred: Fixed asset accounting Asset unitization In-service and capitalization processes Depreciation accounting Asset retirement and retirement unit accounting Fixed asset cleanup and balance remediation projects Capital work in progress (CWIP) analysis and cleanup Asset transfers and asset master data management Regulated utility accounting environments
