As per HRM Directive 518, this employment opportunity is restricted to Arviat Residents only. Reporting to the Supervisor Health Programs, the Caretaker ensures the Health Center runs smoothly. The successful candidate will provide building, equipment, and vehicle maintenance as well as perform regular janitorial duties. Interpreting for unilingual clients is also an occasional job requirement. This position provides; janitorial, security, routine building maintenance, equipment and vehicle maintenance, courier services, and general assistance to the members of the Health Centre team, as well as performing radiographic services.

The Caretaker is responsible for all aspects in making sure that the Health Center is a sanitary and secure location. The general maintenance and janitorial duties include, collecting and disposing of all garbage and waste material; vacuum, wash, and polish (if polishing necessary) all floors and stairs in living quarters. Make minor repairs to ensure safety such as ensuring all doors can be easily opened and closed, and keeping exits clear. The security duties include remain alert to patient and staff safety; ensure a fire exit plan is clearly visible and all staff are aware of it; may assist in the removal of unruly patients or visitors and report all abnormalities to your supervisor; operate and maintain a vehicle to provide transportation services for the Health Centre (when applicable) by driving a vehicle to transport patients, staff, consultant and equipment to/from the airport. Another aspect of this job is to monitor the fire and safety protocols and ensure there is a working relationship with the fire chief to formulate a plan for mutual assistance in disaster situations.

The successful candidate must be mature, responsible, dependable, and able to work independently. As the successful candidate, you must be willing to work on call rotation for medivac and x-rays off hours. Maintaining a high level of confidentiality is also an important element of the job, the knowledge of WHIMIS and Transportation of Dangerous Goods, basic computer skills,

The requirements for this job are; minimum Grade 8, possession of valid driver’s license, one year of basic mechanical or carpentry experience. The successful candidate will be trained in aspects of x-ray techniques.

The Official Languages of Nunavut are Inuktitut, English and French.

Equivalencies that consist of an acceptable combination of education, experience, knowledge, skills and abilities may be considered.

Knowledge of Inuit language, communities, culture, land and Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit is an asset.
