Role Summary

As a Side Hoe Operator, you help drive underground installations forward by placing pipe, managing material, and supporting trench operations that keep crews productive and sites running smoothly.

In this role you will be responsible for the following:

  • Backfill Placement & Trench Grading – Use bucket and auxiliary attachments to place trench backfill in proper lift thicknesses. Ensure even material coverage over pipe, maintain trench alignment, and grade to design elevations.

  • Ditch Approach & Setup – Position your machine correctly along the trench line to ensure safe, efficient access for pipe placement. Maintain proper angles and spacing to protect trench walls and surrounding infrastructure.

  • Pipe Handling – Lower pipe sections into place safely and steadily, coordinating with pipelayers using hand signals to ensure alignment and depth are achieved without damaging bedding or existing pipe.

  • Aggregate Management – Dump bedding and backfill materials in a controlled manner. Avoid overloading the trench and level piles to allow safe, even access and trench progression.

  • Lift Preparation – Set up properly for heavy or high lifts, ensuring machine stability, proper rigging, and clear communication with the crew.

  • Trench Safety & Infrastructure Protection – Operate in and around active trenches with a clear understanding of trench sequencing and crew positioning.
Maintain awareness of underground utilities and overhead hazards while placing pipe, handling material, and performing lifts to prevent damage, injury, or service disruption.

  • Survey Awareness – Always stay alert to survey stakes, lines, and control points. Avoid running over or disturbing layout markers to maintain accuracy and avoid costly rework.

  • Spill Pile Control – When pulling back material, monitor for large lumps or debris that could damage pipe or compromise trench stability.

  • Communication & Coordination – Use clear hand signals, radios, or verbal instructions to coordinate with crew. Adjust movements based on trench sequencing and foreman direction.

  • Site Safety & Compliance – Follow Alberta OHS, ground disturbance rules, and GS Construction safety protocols. Maintain a clean and organized worksite. Participate in daily hazard assessments and report any unsafe conditions or equipment defects immediately.

  • Equipment Care & Maintenance – Perform daily checks on fluids, hoses, and fittings. Grease, refuel, and clean equipment as needed to maintain safe operation.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 2 years of experience operating a side hoe excavator in a water and sewer construction setting.

  • Strong knowledge of trench safety, lifting protocols, and pipelaying support.

  • Ability to interpret grade stakes and follow detailed site instructions.

  • Safety training including CSTS, First Aid/CPR, and OSSA is an asset.

  • Must be physically fit and comfortable working in active construction zones.

  • Valid Class 5 driver’s licence with a clean record.

Working Conditions & Physical Requirements

  • This is a physically active, outdoor role. You'll be working in all kinds of weather.

  • You’ll need to be comfortable lifting up to 50 lbs and handling physically demanding tasks throughout the day.

  • Work takes place on active construction sites with heavy equipment, uneven terrain, and live underground utilities.

Note: We appreciate every application we receive, but we can only contact the candidates who are selected to move forward in the hiring process.
