About the role

Who you are

  • BS / BA college degree or relevant experience
  • Bring 12+ years of software engineering experience, including extensive expertise architecting and operating backend systems and distributed systems at significant scale
  • Have a strong technical foundation across multiple programming languages such as Python, Java, or Go, with deep fluency in modern frameworks, distributed systems patterns, and large-scale system design
  • Have designed, built, and operated high-throughput, data-intensive distributed systems in production — with deep understanding of scalability, fault tolerance, consistency tradeoffs, observability, and performance optimization
  • Have demonstrated technical leadership across ambiguous, cross-pillar initiatives, influencing architecture, execution, and engineering strategy well beyond your immediate team
  • Partner effectively with product, design, data science, and ML stakeholders to translate evolving business needs and customer outcomes into scalable technical solutions
  • Bring strong judgment, communicate clearly with both technical and executive audiences, and make pragmatic tradeoffs in fast-moving environments
  • Demonstrate a proactive embrace of AI, and actively building and applying fluency in emerging technologies to elevate how we work, drive faster outcomes, and expand collective impact
  • Stay curious and open to growth — demonstrating a proactive embrace of AI, and actively building and applying fluency in emerging technologies to elevate how we work, drive faster outcomes, and expand collective impact
  • Experience with experimentation platforms (A/B testing, feature flagging, multi-armed bandits), personalization or recommendation systems, marketing analytics, or customer data platforms
  • Familiarity with the statistical foundations of online experimentation (variance reduction, sequential testing, CUPED, etc.) and the infrastructure required to support them at scale
  • Experience with Node.js and TypeScript in large production systems is a plus, but not required

What the job involves

  • At Webflow, we're building the world's leading AI-native Digital Experience Platform, and we're doing it as a remote-first company built on trust, transparency, and a whole lot of creativity
  • This work takes grit, because we move fast, without ever sacrificing craft or quality
  • Our mission is to bring development superpowers to everyone
  • From entrepreneurs launching their first idea to global enterprises scaling their digital presence, we empower teams to design, launch, and optimize for the web without barriers
  • We believe the future of the web, and work, is more open, more creative, and more equitable
  • And we're here to build it together
  • We're looking for a Senior Staff Software Engineer to help lead the technical future of Convert — our suite of products that give marketing and growth teams the tools to experiment, personalize, and drive real revenue from their web presence
  • The next chapter is ambitious: we're serving some of the world’s largest enterprises and rethinking what a modern, AI-native conversion platform can be
  • This is a cross-team technical leadership role, which means you’re working across a large, complex, revenue-generating system and figuring out what it needs to become
  • You'll partner directly with senior leaders across Engineering, Product, and Design to turn that vision into something you can actually ship
  • Set the long-term technical vision and architecture for backend systems powering experimentation, personalization, analytics, and conversion optimization across Webflow
  • Architect and evolve high-throughput distributed systems and APIs that ingest, process, and serve large volumes of visitor and event data with low latency, high availability, and strong consistency guarantees where it matters
  • Lead foundational platform investments and the data infrastructure that supports them, that unlock new product capabilities for years to come
  • Partner closely with data scientists, ML engineers, and product engineers to productionize statistical and AI/ML capabilities into reliable, real-time backend infrastructure
  • Lead complex, multi-team, multi-quarter technical initiatives end-to-end: from problem framing and technical strategy through implementation, launch, and long-term operational ownership
  • Influence the engineering roadmap and technical strategy across the Convert pillar and partner pillars, identifying the highest-leverage investments and aligning teams behind them
  • Raise the engineering bar across the org through architecture review, technical standards, observability and operational excellence practices, and the systems and tooling that support long-term quality
  • Mentor and grow staff and senior engineers, multiplying your impact through the people you develop and the technical culture you help shape
  • Stay current with industry trends in distributed systems, experimentation platforms, real-time data, and AI/ML infrastructure, and proactively identify opportunities to advance Webflow's backend platform and engineering practices
  • Translate product vision into concrete technical problems and execution plans

Benefits

  • Modern & inclusive healthcare coverage
  • Retirement saving matches and financial planning
  • Flexible paid time off
  • Annual retreat and offsites
  • WFH Office setup budget
  • Health and wellness stipend
  • Remote work reimbursements for phone & wifi
  • Webflow subscription discount
  • Remote-first flexibility
