Purpose and General Description:

NCC is looking for a passionate person to join the New Brunswick stewardship team as a Stewardship Intern. Working closely with New Brunswick’s Stewardship Manager, this internship position will help the stewardship team conduct fieldwork in New Brunswick, process field data, and prepare reports. There are also opportunities to work closely with partner organizations, local stewards, and volunteers. They will engage the public in our on-the-ground stewardship work, coordinating a series of volunteer working days and public outreach events on NCC lands. This position provides a balance of field work and office work, plus engaging hands-on with volunteers who share NCC’s passion for land conservation. This position is intended to provide an inspiring, learning-focused environment for a junior professional.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Participate in physical land management activities as an alternate member of the stewardship field team, including trail building, invasive species control, habitat monitoring, restoration work, and garbage removal.
  • Monitor NCC properties on foot to document observations and map property features.
  • Coordinate and run a series of work events for volunteers held on NCC nature reserves.
  • Handle all event administration including logistics, partner collaborations, participant registration / communication, and database management.
  • Lead special projects as directed by the NCC supervisor.
  • Develop communication materials and use social / traditional media to promote events, including participating in media interviews (radio, tv, print).
  • Compile and manage data and write post-event reports.
  • Represent NCC in a professional manner at public events
  • Other duties as assigned

Required Skills and Attributes:

This posting is targeted to individuals possessing the following skills and traits:

  • University/college student or recent graduate with a biology, forestry, or environmental science/studies degree. Those having also attended a technical school (forestry/wildlife) a strong plus;
  • Enthusiastic about conserving nature;
  • Adaptable/ flexible with day-to-day plans;
  • Comfortable hiking/working in remote wilderness locations without trails (dense forest with black flies / ticks etc.) for extended periods in various weather;
  • Enjoys working as part of a team, and has a sense of humour, compassionate, good-natured, positive attitude;
  • Clear, professional and thoughtful communicator to landowners, public, colleagues;
  • Reliable, punctual, and responsible;
  • Willingness to learn and follow protocols;
  • Bilingual in French is an asset.
  • Self-motivated to work independently;
  • Excellent organizational skills;
  • Proficient with data management and spreadsheet software;
  • Physical work will be required (e.g., strenuous hiking, carrying a heavy backpack, etc.);
  • Valid driver’s license, ability to rent a vehicle (must be 21 years) and comfort driving on highways and rough roads.
  • Basic knowledge of plants, wildlife, and birds;
  • Navigational skills including understanding of GPS devices or applications, compass, and air photo interpretation;
  • Experience engaging with members of the public or volunteers;
  • Standard First Aid - Level C CPR or Remote First Aid certification.

Terms of Employment:

  • Subject to funding, this is a 17-week position from May 4 - August 28, 2026; with the possibility of extension.
  • Compensation: $21.00/hour;
  • Position will be based in Fredericton, NB, with travel throughout the province and some weekend work. Travel expenses will be reimbursed.
  • This position will require multi-day overnight trips to remote locations and camping.
  • Position funding may require the candidate to have been attending university or college in the areas of Science or Technology. Some position funding may require the candidate be aged 30 or under.
