Job Summary
Mandate: The Senior Manager, Climate and Sustainability leads the development, implementation, and operational alignment of institution-wide sustainability and climate action initiatives in support of the Climate and Sustainability Action Plan (CSAP). This position plays a central role in translating strategic climate and sustainability goals into institutional practice; designing and refining policy frameworks, performance tools and cross-campus systems that embed climate action and sustainability into UVic’s planning, operations and decision-making.
As a university-wide resource, the Senior Manager works in close collaboration with the Director, Campus Planning and Sustainability and university leadership to ensure that sustainability policies, reporting frameworks and initiatives are effectively integrated into institutional structures and priorities. The role provides expert guidance on emerging climate risks, regulatory compliance and decarbonization strategies and oversees major initiatives that position UVic as a leader in post-secondary sustainability practice.
Objectives:
- Lead the implementation of the operational and institutional components of the CSAP.
- Translate research and best practices into actionable programs and policies, supporting pilots and scaling solutions campus-wide.
- Coordinate cross-departmental engagement to embed sustainability into executive-level decision-making, policies and planning.
- Oversee university-wide sustainability reporting and compliance requirements, improving institutional transparency and performance.
- Provide strategic oversight of sustainability related data governance, grant-funded projects and technical performance metrics.
- Supervise the sustainability team and manage major project budgets aligned with institutional priorities.
- Contribute to the development and refinement of institutional sustainability policies and planning instruments that align with executive goals and support long-range strategy.
The position may require occasional travel for external engagements, as well as flexibility in working hours to accommodate meetings and events involving a wide range of stakeholders.
Job Requirements
This position requires a graduate degree in Sustainability, Planning, Environmental Science, Engineering, Geography, or a related field and a minimum of 6 years of experience in sustainability leadership within a large, complex institution. An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered.
- Demonstrated experience leading sustainability programs in large, complex organizations—preferably in higher education or a similar institutional setting.
- Strong understanding of how to work within university governance structures, including experience supporting planning, capital projects and operational decision-making.
- Knowledge of sustainability reporting frameworks and compliance requirements (e.g., STARS, Climate Change Accountability Report), and experience managing data collection, analysis and performance tracking.
- Knowledge in a breadth of sustainability practices, including but not limited to: climate change and resiliency measures, sustainable procurement, green buildings, low-carbon energy and efficiency strategies, zero waste, environmental justice and communications.
- Demonstrated ability to contribute to policy development processes and translate strategic priorities into operational frameworks across a complex institution.
- Ability to apply sustainability data to financial planning, capital investment decisions and long-term institutional goals.
- Proven experience managing budgets, developing and administering grants and overseeing the use of funding to meet institutional priorities.
- Supervisory experience, including supporting staff development, managing performance and coordinating work across a team.
- Strong project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects and priorities, meet deadlines and coordinate with different departments.
- Excellent communication skills, including the ability to prepare and deliver presentations and reports to diverse audiences.
- Proven ability to facilitate stakeholder engagement, lead cross-functional collaboration and build partnerships with internal and external stakeholders.
- Experience developing and implementing communication, outreach and education strategies.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to turn data into and innovative recommendations in the face of complex and evolving sustainability challenges.
- Commitment to advancing sustainability and climate action through inclusive and collaborative approaches.
