Reporting to: Clinical Investigator(s), Ted Rogers Cardiac Genome Clinic Research Program

About the Role

We are seeking a Research Associate (Genome Analyst/Research Genetic Counsellor) to play a pivotal role in advancing precision cardiology through genomic science. This position is with the Cardiac Genome Clinic, a translational research initiative that combines clinical care, advanced genomics, and data science to improve outcomes for individuals with cardiac disease. The Cardiac Genome Clinic is a program affiliated within the Ted Rogers Centre for Heart Research, a unique collaboration between The Hospital for Sick Children, University Health Network, and the University of Toronto.

In this role, you will perform genomic variant analysis and contribute to the design, development, and implementation of cardiac genomic analysis pipelines. You will work as part of a multidisciplinary team alongside medical geneticists, genetic counsellors, bioinformaticians and other local and international experts. Your work will help translate cutting-edge genomic discoveries into meaningful clinical impact.

This is an ideal opportunity for a scientifically curious and collaborative genomic professional who is motivated by real-world impact, innovation, and leadership in a rapidly evolving field.

Here's What You'll Do:

Genomic Analysis & Interpretation

  • Lead and contribute to in-depth analysis of genomic sequencing data from cardiac patients, including those with rare disease and complex phenotypes
  • Perform variant interpretation using ACMG/AMP guidelines and emerging best practices
  • Integrate genomic, phenotypic, and clinical data from diverse patient populations

Pipeline & Tool Development

  • Support the development, validation, and maintenance of genomic analysis pipelines in collaboration with genome scientists and bioinformaticians
  • Evaluate and implement new analytic tools and technologies to enhance diagnostic yield and research capability
  • Ensure analytical workflows meet clinical, research, and quality standards

Research & Translation

  • Work closely with experts at The Hospital for Sick Children including those from The Centre for Applied Genomics, The Precision Child Health Initiative, The Labatt Family Heart Centre, The Division of Clinical and Metabolic Genetics, and Genome Diagnostics Laboratory
  • Collaborate with clinical investigators on translational research initiatives, including novel testing strategies and reporting approaches
  • Contribute to expanding knowledge in cardiac genomics through manuscript authorship and conference presentations
  • Help build and maintain shared genomic resources (datasets, cohorts, infrastructure) for long-term national and international use

Collaboration & Leadership

  • Partner with internal and external stakeholders (clinical teams, genome diagnostics, research programs) to ensure efficient, high-quality genomic reporting
  • Develop and maintain clear, current documentation for analytic procedures and protocols
  • Stay at the forefront of the field by monitoring advances in genomic technologies, bioinformatics, and cardiac genetics

Here's What You'll Need:

Education

One of the following:

  • PhD (or PhD with post-doctoral training preferred) in human genetics, genomics, population genetics, cardiac genomics, or a related discipline
  • Master's in Medical Genomics with demonstrated experience in variant interpretation
  • MSc in Genetic Counselling with CBGC and/or ABGC certification (or eligibility) and experience in genomic analysis

Experience & Skills

  • Hands-on experience in human genomic data analysis (cardiac genomics considered a strong asset)
  • Proven ability to conduct independent research and contribute to peer-reviewed publications
  • Strong understanding of genomic technologies, bioinformatics concepts, and variant interpretation frameworks
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with comfort handling complex datasets
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and a collaborative, team-oriented approach
  • A commitment to understanding and aiding in the pursuit of equity, diversity and inclusion objectives

Employment Type: 1 year contract appointment with possibility of extension
