Position Information**:**
Full-time Support Staff Position Opportunity: Temporary Employee Replacement (see Appendix D of collective agreement) January 2026 – January 2027
Payband: Band J; Starting Rate: $43.61; Four Year Rate: $50.39
Department: Faculty of Health Sciences
Hours: 35 hours per week (1) one hour lunch; Mon – Fri (8:00 am – 4:00 pm; Hours vary each semester based on operational needs, some evenings are required)
Reporting To: Associate Dean
Campus Location: Oshawa
Duties and Responsibilities:
The incumbent acts as a resource and provides assistance to the students and faculty within the Faculty of Health Sciences dental programs. The incumbent facilitates in the learning of students within the dental programs by planning and ensuring the smooth operations of the dental clinics and labs.
- Equipment Maintenance – responsible for the maintenance of the dental lab, dental clinics, radiography and sterilization equipment; and compliance with quality assurance and regulatory standards. Conducts regular maintenance on operatory units and dental equipment, including dexters. Repairs minor equipment breakdown to facilitate operation of the clinic. Schedules maintenance and/or repairs requiring Durham College Facilities Management personnel or external contractors for major repairs. Provides technical support for dental software maintenance and correcting errors as needed.
- Clinic Operations – monitoring of student compliance in regards to infection, prevention and control policies and protocols, before, during, and after clinic sessions; responsible for the “set up” of equipment and supplies for labs and clinics.Ensures equipment and supplies are in good working condition, disinfected, sterilized and “set up” ready for use prior to scheduled clinics and labs.
- Facilitation - In areas determined by Associate Dean, incumbent provides assistance by demonstrating appropriate use of dental products/equipment and software with faculty and students.Supervises radiographs as needed in clinics and facilitates in dental materials lab and radiography practice classes.
- Supplies/Inventory – maintains and monitors inventory in a secure manner.Collaborates with faculty regarding type and volume of supplies, equipment and prescriptions needed to support clinic operation.Obtains quotes and completes purchase requisitions for dental supplies and equipment.Researches new product information through catalogues, Internet and discussion with suppliers, and makes recommendations to faculty in regards to product use.
- General Support – performs reception and clerical duties which includes answering the telephone, booking appointments, taking payments (J-Point), greeting, interacting with students, staff, dentists, clients, and sales representatives.
- Work Study – aid in the recruitment, selection and training of qualified work study students
Qualifications:
- A minimum of a one-year certificate as a Certified Dental Assistant (C.D.A.) with Level ll
- A minimum of five (5) years continuous work experience as a Certified Dental Assistant with Level ll duties or as a Registered Dental Hygienist.
- Current and valid CPR certification is required.
- Must be a member in good standing with the ODAA and/or CDHO.
- Thorough knowledge of the dental environment as well as excellent computer skills, including proficiency in the Microsoft Office suite and Dental software.
- Demonstrated ability to be clear and concise with verbal and written communication skills.
- Demonstrated critical thinking skills to support decision making and referral of issues to appropriate internal or external individuals.
